Korean Geography
The Korean peninsula lies directly between China and Japan, extending in a southeasterly direction from the continent. A relatively small land, Korea is roughly 1,000 kilometers in length and only 216 kilometers wide at its narrowest point ( map links The peninsula is separated from China in the northwest by the Yalu River, from the Soviet Union in the northeast by the Tuman River, and from Japan by the East Sea. China's Shantung peninsula lies just 190 kilometers to the west across the Yellow Sea. The Korean peninsula is in fact a "chain of hills" stretching from the mainland. Mountains cover 70% of Korea's land area, making it one of the most mountainous regions in the world and a great place for hikers and nature lovers. On the peninsula, coexisting uneasily side by side, separated only by the De-militarized Zone roughly approximating the 38th parallel, lie the Republic of Korea in the South and North Korea. The Republic of Korea is somewhat smaller in land area, 99,091 square kilometers compared to 122,370 in the North, but its population of just over 45 million is about twice as large as the North's. Top of Page Administratively, South Korea consists of nine provinces, one special city, Seoul (

The rich volcanic soil of Indonesia is ideal for growing crops; forests flourish and cover about two-thirds of the land. Tin, bauxite, petroleum, natural gas, copper, nickel, and coal are major mineral resources. Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world. North Korea and UN Weapons Inspections
by Tom Holsinger
December 11, 2002
The Bush Administration furthered many other American interests when it obtained a new UN Security Council resolution concerning Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. The UN might not be necessary to advance American vital interests, but it is often useful, and that utility should be preserved. We'd have destroyed whatever effectiveness as the UN has for us had we not sought the further resolution on Iraq. What is about to happen to Iraq will be a useful horrible example of the consequences of defying UN weapons inspections. Other shaky tyrannical regimes with weapons of mass destruction will have definite reason to fear a similar fate, and may try to avoid it by behaving better. That can only help American interests, which alone shows the Bush Administration's wisdom in seeking the new Security Council resolution. But this is not the only benefit we've won. America has many foreign interests which can be best served with the assistance of foreign governments who might balk, or demand too high a price, without a Security Council resolution to provide additional motivation or cover from their domestic political factions. Compliance with such resolutions also provides the indecisive with a path of least resistance.

The Korean Peninsula lies on the northeastern section of the Asian continent, in the northwestern corner of the Pacific Ocean. The peninsula shares its northern border with China and Russia. To the east lies the East Sea, and beyond neighboring Japan. In addition to the mainland peninsula, Korea also includes some 3,000 islands. Korea encompasses a total of 222,154 square kilometers?approximately the same size as Britain or Romania. Excluding reclaimed land areas, almost 45 percent of the countrysome 99,000 square kilometersis considered arable. Mountainous terrain accounts for some two-thirds of the nation¡¯s territory, giving the landscape an appearance similar to Portugal or Hungary. The Taebaeksan range runs the full length of the east coast, where the lashing waves of the East Sea have carved out sheer cliffs and rocky islets. The western and southern slopes are rather gentle, with wide plains and offshore islands honeycombed with inlets.

Land and Life in Korea/East on the Axis of Evil We are off to Korea today. We will see that the Bush Administration has labeled North Korea a member of the 'Axis of Evil,' and look at prospects for war between the U.S. and North Korea. We will view East Asian culture and civilization through the Korean lens, and look at the unique ways that Koreans have accommodated nature in their site selection and living space. We will see South Korea as a country in transition from LDC to MDC. I am grateful to the Korea Society for sponsoring my introductory visit to Korea last October, and so making it possible for you to get to know this wonderful country. I am especially grateful to the Korean Geographer Sang-Hae Lee for sharing his insights into Koreans' unique ways of respecting and shaping the natural landscape. The most important characteristic for us to consider in the modern Geography of Korea is the division of north and south, leading up to and following the Korean War (also known as "America's Forgotten War"). Why was the peninsula divided? The lecture will start with this discussion. General Douglas Macarthur mounted a brilliant counteroffensive in Korea, and wanted to use nuclear weapons to press his advance, even into China proper. President Truman did not go for this strategy, and especially the General's outspoken public calls to pursue it, and sacked Macarthur.

KIM Chong-il has ruled North Korea since his father and the country's founder, president KIM Il-song, died in 1994. After decades of mismanagement, the North relies heavily on international food aid to feed its population, while continuing to expend resources to maintain an army of about 1 million. North Korea's long-range missile development and research into nuclear and chemical weapons are of major concern to the international community.

Following World War II, Korea was split, with the northern half coming under Communist domination and the southern portion becoming Western-oriented. KIM Chong-il has ruled North Korea since his father and the country's founder, president KIM Il-song, died in 1994. After decades of mismanagement, the North relies heavily on international food aid to feed its population while continuing to expend resources to maintain an army of about 1 million. North Korea's long-range missile development and research into nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and massive conventional armed forces are of major concern to the international community. In December 2002, North Korea repudiated a 1994 agreement that shut down its nuclear reactors and expelled UN monitors, further raising fears it would produce nuclear weapons.
