The DMZ divides the peninsula by separating North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) from South Korea (Republic of Korea). The DMZ is 2.4 miles wide and centers on a demarcation line that extends for 151 miles between the Yellow Sea and the East Sea (or Sea of Japan). The DMZ represents a strange combination of peace within tension. There is peace within the zone because it is “demilitarized” and “off limits” to soldiers and civilians: that means plants and animals inhabiting the zone are protected from humans. Yet, there is an uneasy tension between the opposing combat-ready forces of North and South who still face and intimidate each other across the zone. At present South Koreans call the peninsula Hanguk, while North Koreans call the peninsula Choson. South Korea divides itself politically into nine provinces and six special cities. North Korea divides itself politically into nine provinces and three special cities.

Korea is situated on the Korean Peninsula, which spans 1,100 kilometers north to south. The Korean Peninsula lies on the northeastern section of the Asian continent, where Korean waters are joined by the western-most parts of the Pacific. The peninsula shares its northern border with China and Russia. To its east is the East Sea, beyond which neighboring Japan lies. In addition to the mainland peninsula, Korea includes some 3,000 islands.
Korea encompasses a total of 222,154 square kilometers-almost the same size as Britain or Rumania. Some 45 percent of this area, or 99,000 square kilometers, is considered cultivatable area, excluding reclaimed land areas. Mountainous terrain accounts for some two-thirds of the territory like Portugal, Hungary or Ireland.
The Mt. Taebaeksan range runs the full length of the east coast, where the lashing waves of the East Sea have carved out sheer cliffs and rocky islets. The western and southern slopes are rather gentle, forming plains and many offshore islands honeycombed with inlets.
The peninsula features so many scenic mountains and rivers that Koreans have often likened their country to a beautifully embroidered brocade. The highest peak is Mt. Baekdusan in North Korea, which rises up 2,744 meters above sea level along the northern border facing China. Mt. Baekdusan is an extinct volcano where a large volcanic lake, named Cheonji, has been formed. The mountain is regarded as an especially important symbol of the Korean spirit and is mentioned in Korea's national anthem.

North Korea is divided into nine provinces and three special cities. North Korea, although nominally a republic governed by a representative assembly, is actually ruled by the Communist party (known in Korea as the Korea Workers' party). Until his death in 1994, all governmental institutions were controlled by Kim Il Sung (widely known as "The Great Leader"), who had been premier and then president since the country's inception in 1948. A personality cult had glorified Kim, but by the mid-1990s the rapid economic growth of North Korea's early years had given way first to stagnation and then to hardship, and there was widespread dissatisfaction with the repressive regime. Increasingly, Kim's son, Kim Jong Il, had assumed the day-to-day management of the government and, at Kim Il Sung's death in 1994, the son took over leadership of the country. He was named secretary of the Communist party in 1997 and consolidated his power with the title of National Defense Commission chairman in 1998. The North Korean economy revived somewhat in 1999. Under Kim, diplomatic relations have been established with a number of Western nations.

    Introduction
... Transnational Issue Introduction Korea, North Background: Following World War II, Korea was split, with the northern half coming under Communist domination and the southern portion becoming Western-oriented. KIM Chong-il has ruled North Korea since his father and the country's founder, president KIM Il-song, died in 1994. After decades of mismanagement, the North relies heavily on international food aid to feed its population while continuing to expend resources to maintain an army of about 1 million. North Korea's long-range missile development and research into nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and massive conventional armed forces are of major concern to the international community. In December 2002, North Korea repudiated a 1994 agreement that shut down its nuclear reactors and expelled UN monitors, further raising fears it would produce nuclear weapons. Geography Korea, North

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS Even though the Korean War ended in a truce agreement in July 1953, a high level of tension remained between the two countries. Although North Korea presented numerous proposals for peaceful unification after signing the truce, none was premised on the notion of the continuation of the existing South Korean government, which made the proposals unacceptable to Seoul. Throughout the Park era, relations with North Korea were marked by mutual distrust and discord, with only a brief respite between July 1972 and June 1973 when the two sides engaged in high-level negotiations. Hopes were raised that tensions might be reduced and a way toward unification of the divided nation found. Entrenched suspicions made the contentious issues separating the two sides even more difficult to solve, and the talks were broken off (see Relations with North Korea , ch. 4). Meanwhile, the armed confrontation continued (see

Although Located at the same latitude as both St. Louis and San Francisco, mountains and frigid arctic winds from the north give Korea cold winters. Preserved and pickled foods, prepared In Anticipation of the cold winters, are characteristics of Korean cooking. Cold weather and farm work make for hearty food. Unlike neighboring Japan or China, a Korean breakfast, for instance, might be a big bowl of Tripe Soup or Beef Rib Soup with lots of rice. Its Peninsular Location gives Koreans three different seas from which to gather fish- the Yellow Sea, the East Sea (also known as the Sea of Japan), and the unique micro environment where the two seas come together at the south end of the peninsula. Seafood is a feature of Korean life and no table is ever without a bowl of tiny dried and salted fish, even for breakfast.

The Korean Peninsula is located just south of China, separating the Yellow Sea on the West from the Sea of Japan on the East. It connects in the Northeast with Siberia. One of its islands is within 21 miles of Japan, to the Southeast. It is irregularly shaped, 600 miles long and between 130 and 200 miles east to west, encompassing 86,000 square miles. The terrain includes plains near the coastlands, and mountains to the East and North. The number of mountain ranges have earned Korea the nickname "Switzerland of Asia." Among these are the Geum-gahng-sahn along the east coast, the Hahm-gyung-sahn in the northeast and Tae-baek-sahn in the southeast. To the north, in North Korea, is Mt Baek-doo-sahn. The highest mountain in South Korea is Mt. Hal-la-sahn, found on the island of Che-ju-do. Photographs of Korean mountains http://www.hellopageskorea.com/enjoy/tour/gangwon/enjoy_tour-gangwon_nature_body.htm (Photograph from Korean Culture, Tourism, and Language) The two longest rivers of the Korean peninsula are the Am-rok-gahng and the Doo-mahn-gahng with a combined length of 815 miles. The northern Hahn-gahng, which flows through Seoul, is the largest river system. The second largest river system, the Nahk-dong-gahng, flows through the southeast. Many rivers have hydroelectric dams, such as the Chung-pyung dam on the So-yang-gahng River.
