THE SOCIETY AND ITS ENVIRONMENT
Young woman with a changgo, the most popular Korean instrument. The changgo, which is played with the palm of the hand and a thin stick, is an hourglass- shaped drum covered by skins of different thicknesses. Is is used in orchestral and ensemble music and as accompainment for vocals and instrumental musical solos. The instrument is sometimes also carried by dancers. THE KOREAN PENINSULA, located at the juncture of the northeast Asian continent and the Japanese archipelago, has been home to a culturally and linguistically distinct people for more than two millennia. The ancestors of modern Koreans are believed to have come from northeast and Inner Asia. Like their Japanese neighbors, they have been deeply influenced by Chinese civilization. The elite culture and social structure of traditional Korea, especially during the Chosn Dynasty (1392-1910) founded by General Yi Sng-gye, reflected neoConfucian norms (see The Origins of the Korean Nation , ch. 1). Despite centuries of Chinese cultural influence, an episode of Japanese colonialism (1910-45), division into United States and Soviet spheres after World War II (1939-45), and the Korean War (1950-53, known in North Korea as the Fatherland Liberation War), the Korean people have retained their ethnic and cultural distinctiveness. Indeed, cultural distinctiveness, autonomy, and creativity have become central themes in the North Korean regime's

Grace Park to liberate North Korea?
NYT columnist Thomas Freidman seems to think so. He contributed a piece to Golf Digest (to which I do not subscribe, but someone at the Joongang apparently does) entitled (and I'm translating from the Korean here) "Totalitarianism cannot take over a nation of golfers." Anyway, Friedman said the biggest threat to the North Korean regime is not the Bush administration, but golfers like Grace Park and Choe Kyeong-ju, arguing that as they become examples to young North Koreans, its totalitarian system will easily collapse. I'd imagine this is a case of the Joongang selectively editing (it cited only two lines from the piece), because I refuse to believe that even a NYT columnist can be that clueless. Anyway, it goes without saying that since we're talking about Grace Park, Kevin of IA's two ahem tribute posts are the places to go if Korean lesbians and wet T-shirts are your thing. Which, of course, they are. Oh, and if, per chance, you do subscribe to Golf Digest, the April issue has a big feature on Korean golf, which might be of interest.

The talks would have marked diplomatic progress
High-level talks between Japan and North Korea due to take place this weekend have been postponed. According to a Japanese government minister, the North Koreans called off the meeting saying they were not ready. The official focus was financial aid for Korean survivors of the 1945 atomic bomb explosions in Japan. But the issue of Japanese nationals alleged to have been abducted by North Korea more than 20 years ago was also expected to be raised by Tokyo. Kidnap controversy Japan believes at least 11 people kidnapped by North Korea Used to teach North Korean spies Japanese language and culture Spies then entered South Korea posing as Japanese tourists The talks would have been the first ministerial-level meeting between the two countries since July 2000. Japanese Health Minister Chikara Sakaguchi, who was supposed to fly to Singapore on Saturday for the meeting with his North Korean counterpart, expressed irritation about Pyongyang's decision.

The group headed for a new life in Japan Five young men and women whose parents were abducted by North Korea have been reunited with their families in Japan.
There were tears and hugs at Tokyo airport when they touched down after a flight from Pyongyang. Their release was secured by the Japanese prime minister, who promised to give North Korea food aid and $10m of medical supplies in return. But as he returned home he was criticised for having no information on 10 other abductees. And there were mixed feelings about three relatives who felt they could not return from North Korea. Breakthrough at summit The Japanese leader Junichiro Koizumi flew to Pyongyang hoping for a breakthrough, in what North Korea's state news agency called a "historic" summit. During Mr Koizumi's only previous visit, in 2002, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il admitted that several Japanese had been kidnapped during the Cold War to train the country's spies in the language and culture. There was outrage in Japan, and North Korea soon agreed that they - but not their Korean-born children - could return home.

SHINPO LIGHT WATER REACTOR PLANT, NORTH KOREA
The Shinpo plant will consist of two 1,000MW blocks based on the South Korean standard nuclear plant (KSNP) design. Total investment was originally estimated at $4.5 billion. Before any work could begin a series of protocols governing privileges-immunities, consular protection, communications, transportation, control of construction sites and services to be provided by the North, had to be negotiated and signed. NUCLEAR ENERGY AND KOREA The Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organisation (KEDO) is a New York-based international consortium established in Geneva in 1994. The consortium comprises Japan, South Korea, the USA, the European Union and eight UN member countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Finland and Indonesia. It was formed as part of an agreement whereby the international consortium members would build a 2,000MW nuclear power plant in North Korea and, in return, North Korea would phase out its graphite reactors, which are capable of producing bomb-grade material. Unlike the original Pyongyang programme, the new light water reactor plant will be under the scrutiny of international inspectors, guaranteeing the communist country's nuclear power plants play no role in nuclear weapon development. The location chosen for the new plant is the Kumho area of Shinpo, in the South Hamkyong Province of North Korea. CONSTRUCTION A geological survey team finally started work in January 1996 to prepare for the construction of two light-water nuclear reactors. The survey focused on the possible impact of an earthquake on the proposed reactor site. A groundbreaking ceremony to mark the launch of the reactor construction project took place in August 1997. The consortium plans to complete construction of the two light-water reactors by 2003, but completion will be subject to unique uncertainties.

North Korea Exploration of the World's Most Mysterious Land Sections: Not a country like you and I know it. Welcome to my home page. During the first three days in October 1997 I had the chance to be in North Korea as a tourist. Natural curiosity took me there. I have traveled extensively and enjoy getting to the bottom of things. Having lived in Japan for over four years I found little to no news forthcoming from this land shrouded in mystery. The first opportunity I got I took and saw the land. As a matter of fact, I had found that Asia had a lot to offer but in the West Oriental culture could not be found and thus offered me few insights into its diverse cultures. Asia is very mysterious, which is a reason I came to live here in the first place. First, Orientals think differently from Westerners. We start our story with a bow What some of these pictures and story show are some views from this land of Koryo, among the first ever made public not officially sanctioned by the North Korean government.
External North Korea The story starts with the first ride taken from the airport to the capital, Pyongyang. Poverty permeated the air. Unlike any world capital stifling with advertising of all sorts from the moment you look out the airport windows, Pyongyang's airport is very small with parking space reminiscent of an medium-sized mall, surrounded by trees. Half a dozen cars plus some buses were parked outside.

http://www.vuw.ac.nz/~caplabtb/dprk/HumanSide.htm
The Human Side of North Korea By Randall Ireson Much has been written about the "immanent collapse" of North Korea, and of serious human rights issues in that country. Difficulties in monitoring and administering food and medical aid programs also frequently make headlines. There is often (but not always) truth to these stories. But as we enter a new year and encounter North Korea's enhanced effort to build diplomatic and economic relations with the rest of the world, we should remind ourselves that there are ordinary people living there who must live within the limitations of their system, and are greatly affected by our policies and actions as neighbors. As coordinator of the American Friends Service Committee's (Quaker) assistance program in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK), I have made six trips there over the past three years, and guided three study delegations of North Korean agricultural scientists in the US and China. AFSC has been working with DPRK organizations since the early 1980s, including bring a delegation of educators to several US colleges in 1997. Like all foreigners, we are accompanied by official "guides" for all meetings with Korean officials and farm leaders. Returning from an official meeting one afternoon, one of our guides told my wife and me that when his wife was pregnant, they would walk through the Potong River park each evening and he would sing to her and his unborn son. Would he share the song? He would, and sang it for us in the tender voice of any father wishing well for his child.

Northeast Asia's intra-mural mural wars
By David Scofield
SEOUL - The nuclear dispute isn't the only defining issue involving China, North Korea and South Korea. Culture wars, too, are being waged diplomatically as well as passionately over little-known but breathtakingly lovely tomb murals in Northeast Asia and what these paintings say about more than a thousand years of human development, art and religion.
Except for historians of 6th-century East Asian culture, few people know of the controversial Goguryeo tomb murals tucked away in China's remote northeast, but North Korea also claims the art and tombs depicting life, death and an afterlife. And, problematically for both Beijing and Pyongyang, they are found on both sides of the China-North Korea border, with implications for the history of the Manchurian region.
South Korea, with the financial resources and academic and political muscle to argue its Korean Peninsula patrimony, has been muted in arguing the case of the Goguryeo murals, its close economic ties with China being a primary reason for its reticence. North Korea, too, diminished in resources but desperately depending on China, has been all but unheard on the issue. China, meanwhile, has mounted a powerful campaign, the Northeast Asian Project, launched in February 2002.
