Kim Il Sung promoted traditional Korean arts and culture vigorously, though his motives for doing so are debatable. He was a fierce nationalist who was convinced of the superiority of Korean culture: North Koreans were told that they were ethnically superior, that their country was the best in the world and Kim Il Sung was the greatest man who ever lived. What that all means is that if you have an interest in traditional Korean arts, North Korea is the place to see them. You can view exhibitions of traditional or modern pottery, sculpture, painting and architecture on request, and your guide will take you to films or the theatre for a reasonable charge. Traditional music is similar to that of Japan and China, with an emphasis on strings. The two main forms are the stately chongak and the folksier minsogak . Among the folk dances are drum dances ( mugo - a hectic, lively court dance where the participants wear drums around their necks), mask dances ( talchum ), monk dances (

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Since the establishment of the Han Dynasty The Han Dynasty During the Han Dynasty, China officially became a Confucian state and prospered domestically: agriculture, handicrafts and commerce flourished, and the population reached 50 million. Meanwhile, the empire extended its political and cultural influence over Vietnam, Central Asia, Mongolia, and Korea before it finally collapsed under a mixture of domestic and external pressures. The first of the two periods of the dynasty, namely the

The country is located between China and Japan. It was once a large unified country that had governed territories in Manchuria as recently as 1908, and some territory in present-day Siberia. At one point, it was the centre for the very best silk in the world, as noted in ancient Chinese scripts. Korea was also known for having the world's best goldsmiths during the 7th-8th centuries. The publication technique of movable type was invented in Korea in 1232, long before Gutenberg introduced the concept in Europe. These types used Chinese characters and were initially mainly used to mass-produce Buddhist sutras.

    9. 1stopKorea - North Korea Trip, Departing Kimland (pg. 11)
by HelenLouise Hunter, Stephen J. Solarz. A good book for someone wanting a general introduction to north korea culture, lifestyle and history.
    http://1stopkorea.com/nk-trip11-departure.htm
Departing Kimland One last day of waking up at 6am on 'vacation'. Only a few more chances to be harried into hurrying by Mr. Baek and Mr. Huk. Only a few more hours until being able to get a real newspaper and watch some international CNN . . . That's what ran through my mind as I hung up the phone from the wake-up call and rested my head back on the lumpy pillow. Only a few more hours and I'd be out of this place. I couldn't imagine the isolation people on extended assignments in Kimland must feel. It had only been four days and to a man we were all dying to get out. I can't remember the last place I'd wanted to leave as much as North Korea. We had our last meal down in Dining Room #2 and boarded the bus for the quick ride back to the airport. For a nice change everyone actually arrived downstairs on time and ready to go. Apparently the Americans in the group weren't the only ones looking forward to getting out. The 30 minute ride back out to the airport was for the most part quiet and uneventful. Just talking to the guides about how unusually busy they were with all the tourists in town for

    North Korea
    History
According to the Koreans, the first of their kin was born in 2333 BC. Scientists with slightly less respect for Korean mythology believe Korea was first inhabited around 30,000 BC, when tribes from central and northern Asia stumbled on the peninsula. Under constant pressure from China, these tribes banded together to found a kingdom in the 1st century AD. By 700 AD the Silla Kingdom of Korea was hitting its cultural stride, littering the country with palaces, pagodas and pleasure gardens and influencing the development of Japan's culture. But in the early 13th century the Mongols reached Korea and gave it their customary scorched-earth treatment. When the Mongol Empire collapsed, the Choson Dynasty took over and a Korean script was developed. In 1592 Japan invaded, followed by China - the Koreans were routed and the Chinese Manchu Dynasty moved in. Turning its back on the mean and nasty world, Korea closed its doors to outside influence until the early 20th century, thus presaging the events of the twentieth century. In 1904, Japan invaded, and formally annexed the peninsula in 1910. The Japanese, who hung on until the end of WWII, were harsh masters, and anti-Japanese sentiment is still strong in both North and South Korea. Much of the guerilla warfare conducted against the occupying Japanese took place in the northern provinces and Manchuria, and northerners are still proud of having carried a disproportionate burden in the struggle against Japan.

News Bulletin Current Affairs Euro 2004 ... Reader Response Goethe Lands in North Korea The Goethe Institute is coming. After years of delicate negotiation Germany's Goethe Institute is becoming the first western cultural institute to open a reading room in the North Korean capital Pyongyang, a major cultural coup.
Located in a cultural center in the middle of the city, the Goethe Institute's reading room is about 150 square meters (1,615 square feet) in size and contains 8,000 books, magazines, CDs and videos. On June 3, the unprecedented project will be opened in Stalinism's last stronghold by a German delegation that includes the Goethe Institute's president, Jutta Limbach. "The opening of the center is a big success for our cultural policies," Limbach (photo) said in a statement. "Culture and education can achieve many things which politics alone cannot. It is our interest to use the existing possibilities for a free flow of information anywhere in the world. It is a big step forward that we have now found partners in North Korea."

Since the establishment of the Han Dynasty colonies in the northern Korean Peninsula 2,000 years ago, Koreans have been under the cultural influence of China . During the period of Japanese domination (1910-45), the colonial regime attempted to force Koreans to adopt the Japanese language and culture . Neither the long and pervasive Chinese influence nor the more coercive and short-lived Japanese attempts to make Koreans loyal subjects of the Japanese emperor, however, succeeded in eradicating their ethnic, cultural, and linguistic distinctiveness. The desire of the North Korean regime to preserve its version of Korean culture, including many traditional aspects such as food, dress, art, architecture, and folkways, is motivated in part by the historical experience of cultural domination by both the Chinese and the Japanese. Juche 's ideology asserts Korea 's cultural distinctiveness and creativity as well as the productive powers of the working masses. The ways in which Juche rhetoric is used shows a razor-thin distinction between revolutionary themes of self-sufficient socialist construction and a virulent ethnocentrism. In the eyes of North Korea's leaders, the "occupation" of the southern half of the peninsula by "foreign imperialists" lends special urgency to the issue of culturalethnic identity. Not only must the people of
