Pollution Prevention Training in
Technical and Vocational School Programs
SURVEY SUMMARY
November, 2002
Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming INTRODUCTION The Peaks to Prairies Pollution Prevention Center is an EPA-funded project operated by the Montana State University Extension Service. The Center serves as a pollution prevention information clearinghouse for Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. In cooperation with U.S. EPA Region 8 states, Peaks to Prairies looks for ways to encourage adoption of pollution prevention practices by citizens, businesses, educational institutions and government agencies. The Center networks with state and local pollution prevention service providers by offering access to current information and contacts, encouraging collaboration and leveraging of resources, and facilitating communication about activities and projects. APPROACH A survey of vocational and technical schools in Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming was conducted in the spring and summer of 2002. The purpose of the survey was to determine how waste minimization, source reduction, and pollution prevention concepts are being included in vocational training programs. We also wanted to determine how schools preferred to receive information about these topics. With the results, we hoped to publicize examples of how curriculums are currently teaching this information as well as identify opportunities for more integration. Survey results have been made available to help schools refine existing programs and identify partnerships for future collaborations.

Teacher of Year Program General Guidelines and Instructions:
The classroom teacher is the backbone of the American educational system. No one person has a greater impact on the education of a child than does the teacher who creates the primary learning and instructional environment. It is the mission of the State and National Teacher of the Year Programs to recognize and honor the contributions of classroom teachers. NDEA, in conjunction with the Council of Chief State School Officers and Scholastic, Inc. is a sponsor of the State and National Teacher of the Year Programs. The program is the oldest and most prestigious honors program to focus public attention on excellence in teaching. Nomination:
Nominations for North Dakota Teacher of the Year must come from a teacher, school administrator, school district trustee, local education association, student or parent. Individual North Dakota schools may nominate a candidate, which means systems with more than one school may nominate more than one candidate. Administrators, county superintendents or their designees, and local association presidents will receive nomination forms in the mail in early March. Nominations are due by the end of April of each year.

What number of colleges and universities that have closed Family and Consumer Sciences Education programs within the last three years (provide the reason)? The last student graduated from the University of North Dakota teacher education program at the end of fall semester 1995. Program size, availbility of resources, and redefinition of the mission of the University were all cited as factors in this decision. b. What possibilities are there for expanding and/or reopening Family and Consumer Sciences Education Programs? It is highly unlikely that there will be program expansion. Current enrollment would not justify expansion even though the need for teachers is growing. As the University System continues to review the mission of each campus it is likely that there will be fewer teacher education programs in all instructional areas and those which exist will share more undergraduate courses REPORTED 1996-97 Teacher Education Programs a. The family and consumer sciences education (FCSE) program at North Dakota State University has been approved by the State Board for Vocational Education for the preparation of family and consumer sciences teachers. The FCSE program is a versatile major due to the preparation of the student as both an educator and a family and consumer scientist.
    The Program
As an educator, the FCSE graduate is prepared to guide a variety of teaching-learning situations. Since education is a people-centered profession, the program focuses on characteristics of various learners or clients, learning principles and different applications of the teaching-learning process. A wide range of strategies for working with individuals or groups is included. Hands-on experience is provided throughout the program to develop the teaching skills learned in classes.
As a family and consumer sciences educator, the FCSE student is prepared with a comprehensive subject matter background. Courses from all areas of family and consumer sciences are included in the program. This contributes to the versatility of the major since the broad range of knowledge may be applied to a wide variety of settings.

Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.
