Too Much Fat, Meat, Chicken, Cheese; Virtually No Non-Dairy Alternatives The National School Lunch Program gets poor marks in nutrition according to a new report released today by the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). In a survey conducted in August, PCRM dietitians learned that only 1 of 12 elementary school districts interviewed is substituting lower-fat, cholesterol-free plant protein for meat on school menus. And, only one of the school districts routinely offers calcium-rich milk alternatives, a surprising finding given the growing concern with milk as a potential factor in a variety of health problems. The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program that serves 27 million lunches per day. "Our research shows that the National School Lunch Program is failing to routinely serve healthy, low-fat, fiber- and nutrient-rich meals to children," says PCRM dietitian Jen Keller. "While some schools are lowering fat and making healthier vegetarian meals available, not enough have done their homework when it comes to nutrition. Given the sky-high incidences of obesity and related conditions in this country, school menus obviously need some remedial help."

The newly elected governors from Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia and Delaware may be just out of the starting blocks, but they’ve wasted little time in grappling with an increasingly urgent question: How can technology help advance their agendas?
All four governors highlighted technology initiatives in their first state-of-the-state addresses. Montana’s governor even celebrated an Information Technology Day soon after taking office.
"Improvements in technology accounted for a lot of the gains in productivity and in our economy during the past decade," North Dakota Governor John Hoeven said. "Like private industry, we in government need to develop and utilize technology because it will be key to helping us prosper."
The governors are examining the myriad ways technology can enhance service to citizens and promote economic development — from finishing a high-speed, broadband network to helping recruit high-tech employees to offering an array of electronic government services.

HIGHER EDUCATION NOTEBOOK: Rare cosmic show has UND scholars primed and ready
Venus' transit, a once in 120 year event, to be featured live on Web site June 8
    By David Dodds
    Herald Staff Writer

It happens only twice every 120 years, and this time UND space watchers are ready with the latest scientific technology and know-how. The last time Venus and the Earth's orbits were exactly in line against the backdrop of the sun, the horse and buggy was the primary mode of transportation and North Dakota still was years from statehood. That was in 1882. "The technology that we have today is phenomenal compared to then," said Tim Young, a UND professor of physics. "Historically, it was going to be used to accurately determine how far Venus is from us, and they were able to get within 2 percent of the actual value without the help of (Global Positioning System) and atomic clocks." Today, as Young and a team of UND researchers prepare for the return of Venus' transit, as it's known, they have the modern gizmos that their space-studying predecessors could only have dreamed about.
