Vast Dakota Territory, at the geographic center of the continent, was divided into North and South Dakota in 1889. Rich loess soils favor agriculture, but the practice of draining glacier-formed prairie potholes to increase cropland destroys critical habitat for migrating birds. Extremes in weather and in world markets subject wheat farmers to cycles of boom and bust, but petroleum and lignite production assists the economy. North Dakota stocks a huge share of the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Text source: National Geographic Atlas of the World, Seventh Edition, Area

North Dakota Brings People and Data Together
By Bob Nutsch, GIS Coordinator, State of North Dakota
Since the early 1990s, North Dakota state agency personnel have been using GIS for data analysis and map production. However, complexity, duplication of effort, inefficient use of time, and costs were increasing every year because GIS staff at the state's agencies had developed a variety of data standards and storage methods and made modifications to the original data. North Dakota Hub Explorer displaying Game and Fish Department information. This map uses data from the State Water Commission and Department of Transportation. Within these state agencies, multiple copies of similar data with different dates, different projections, different formats, and different modifications were maintained. Personnel changes at these agencies made it increasingly difficult to find data. Even when desired data was located, it was difficult to know if the data was the most recent version. Data often required reprojection. In addition, as digital geospatial datasets grew in number and size, several agencies began to investigate designing their own independent database storage systems and, in some cases, their own Web-based systems. Clearly, a statewide solution for GIS data storage, sharing, and retrieval was needed.

Geography and Natural Resouce Profile Another interesting geologic formation is known as the Williston Basin, which contains oil and natural gas. Standing Rock Reservation falls well within this basin. Climate and Temperatures Standing Rock Reservation falls within the location of the geographic center of North America, and is typical continental climate. This means the climate is characterized by large annual, daily, and day-to-day temperature changes, and light to moderate precipitation which tends to be irregular in time and coverage; or extremely cold in the winters and hot and humid in the summer. Cold and dry air masses originating in the Polar Regions, warm and moist air masses from tropical regions, or mild, dry air from the Northern Pacific prevents any current weather regime from being anything but monotonous. If you don’t like the weather, wait a couple of hours, so to speak. Normal average annual temperatures in North Dakota ranges from 37 degrees Fahrenheit in the Northeast to 43 degrees Fahrenheit on the Southern boundary. January is the coldest month with average temperatures ranging from 2 degrees F in the northeast to 17 degrees F in the southwest. July is the warmest month with temperatures averaging 67 degrees F in the northeast to 73 degrees F in parts of the south. The range of normal average monthly temperatures between the coldest and warmest months is 54 degrees F in the southwest and 65 degrees F in the northeast. These large annual ranges attest to the continental nature of the temperatures around Standing Rock. (Taken from the Northern Prairie Research Center)
