Large Schools Should Take Lessons from Small Schools
According to the National Education Goals Panel, smaller schools have fewer discipline problems, and large schools can learn a few lessons from those schools. Included: The U.S. Department of Education hosts a satellite workshop on applying for Smaller Learning Communities grants on June 8 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Stories about school shootings grab the national headlines, but school violence isn't business as usual in the nation's schools. Avoid Planting Trees Near Lines
To avoid power disruptions, blinking lights, maintenance costs and service calls, never plant trees near overhead power lines. Trees should be carefully planted in such a way that when they become mature the tree cannot fall into the line and its branches remain a safe distance from the line. It is also important to keep shrubs far enough from poles and other utility structures.
    Call Before You Dig
One Call makes it easy to be safe. By using One Call, the danger of your excavation equipment damaging critical utility systems is significantly reduced. One Call eliminates the need to call each utility when you plan to dig. It will save time and confusion if you know the location of the following: township, range, section and quarter or the 911 street address. One Call will also inquire as to the type of project and length and depth of the excavation. To contact North Dakota One Call, dial 1-800-795-0555.
    Electrical Emergencies
Accidents involving electrical lines or wires require special precautions to prevent further injury. Until the power source has been turned off or removed, always consider an electrical wire or downed power line energized and maintain a safe distance from it. Do not touch anyone in contact with a downed power line. Call for medical assistance and contact Northern Plains Electric immediately to take care of the electrical line.

A Lesson in Teacher Training
Kimberly Johnson, a recent graduate of the University of North Dakota, is a first-year English teacher at Valley Middle School in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Kimberly and and her mentor, Laurie Stenehjem, share their journal entries with Education World readers in alternating weeks. Usually it is the new teacher thanking the mentor teacher for all he or she has done. It was so interesting to read last week's entry and see all the benefits Laurie feels she gets out of being a mentor. At the beginning of this school year, I often felt I wouldn't know what I'd ever do without a mentor teacher. I spent a lot of time in Laurie's office, discussing ideas or working out problems, laughing or crying. I thought I would need a mentor for the rest of my career. Now, after almost a year of working with Laurie, I know I will be OK without her wherever I teach next year. The best mentors cultivate confidence in new teachers. Laurie has given her resident teachers enough confidence to apply for jobs all over the country. Although we will miss her, she has helped us find our way to our teacher selves.
