North Dakota PTA Parenting - A Key Piece in the Puzzle Parenting - A Key Piece in the Puzzle National PTA has developed six standards for parent/family involvement in the schools. The six standards are: communicating, parenting, student learning, volunteering, school decision making and advocacy, and collaborating with the community. Quality indicators for successful programs include: 1. Communicate the importance of positive relationships between parents and their children. 2. Link parents to programs and resources within the community that provide support service for families. 3. Reach out to all families, not just those who attend parent meetings. 5. Provide an accessible parent/family information and resource center to support parents and families with training, resources, and other services. What are some ways these can be incorporated in your school? -Sponsor regular parenting classes or an annual Parent University in cooperation with local professionals. Provide child care and transportation if possible. Consider seeking donations for a Toy Lending Library where parents can check out an age appropriate toy for their child when the class is over.

New York Post Editorial , January 30, 2004 "Because Reisenbach is a charter school, not a traditional public school, something can be done about its chronic and abysmal failures: It can be shut. SUNY trustees were asked to do just that. Instead, they punted." Newswire - January 27, 2004 A Bridge to a Charter School: City Offers Campus Space in Return for Assistance
By Justin Blum , Washington Post , January 25, 2004 "What we're seeing now is a recognition that the District itself cannot handle . . . everything it needs to do by itself in a centralized way," said Jeanne Allen of the Center for Education Reform, a Washington-based group that supports charter schools. Highlights : As of January 2003, nearly 2,700 charter schools are operating in 36 states and the District of Columbia, serving over 684,000 students.

For Grandparents and Special Others Raising Children North Dakota
Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children A State Fact Sheet August 2002
Across the country, more than six million children approximately 1 in 12 children are living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. North Dakota has more than 113,000 children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. In many of these households, grandparents and other relatives are the primary caregivers (“kinship caregivers”) for children whose parents cannot or will not care for them due to substance abuse, illness and death, abuse and neglect, economic hardship, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, and other family and community crises. In response to the growing numbers of these kinship care families, state legislatures, public and private agencies, and grassroots coalitions in North Dakota and across the country have begun to expand services and supports for children living with kin inside and outside of the foster care system. A Look at the Numbers: Kinship Care in North Dakota The data below show the numbers of grandparents who are living in households with at least one grandchild under the age of 18, as well as the numbers of grandparents who are the primary caregivers for these grandchildren. These numbers were reported by the 2000 U.S. Census and are available for every place (as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau) in the country, including cities, towns, villages, and boroughs, on the U.S. Census website.*
