82. Technology Counts: North Dakota
north dakota students might well have more access to computers than students in State education Agency Web Site www.dpi.state.nd.us/ State education Agency
http://www.edweek.org/sreports/tc/policy/states/nd.htm
North Dakota was investing in computers years before many other states, and, for that reason, it has often been cited as a leader in educational technology. Indeed, its computer-to-student ratio is one of the lowest in the nation, at 5-to-1, according to the research firm Market Data Retrieval. Join our on-line Town Meeting to discuss what role technology should play in education reform.
That figure, however, is not as grand as it might seem, and neither is the state's level of commitment to technology, school officials say. "Obsolescence has caught up with us," says Joe Linnertz, North Dakota's assistant superintendent for public instruction. North Dakota students might well have more access to computers than students in most other states, Linnertz says, but often the equipment is old and slow. "I'd say 50 percent of our computers are older Apples." State Education Agency Web Site:

Does state regularly conduct its own data collection? No. North Dakota does not have a technology plan it considers functional. No. The state does not collect data on technology in its schools. FINANCIAL COMMITMENT Did state fund technology in FY 98? Does state target technology funds to reduce inequity? How does state help schools update their physical infrastructure? Yes. In FY 98 and FY 99, North Dakota allocated a total of $1M from its general fund. The money is distributed through a competitive-grant process and can be used on any purchase or program that is technology-related. Yes. The state gives students who are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches priority in its technology-funding formula. The state also stipulates that small districts receive at least $5,000 in technology funds.

Be sunshine safe: EPA launches Global UV Index
5/26 - Here in the West, enoying the summer sunshine can lead to a whole lot of exposure to dangerous UV rays. This is especially true at high altitudes where the thin atmosphere offers less protection. To help you protect your family, EPA is updating the UV Index, a daily forecast of the expected risk of overexposure to the sun, to be consistent with international guidelines developed by the World Health Organization. The revised Index features a new color scheme and modified sun exposure categories. Simply enter your city or zipcode to find out today's Index. More information Today's UV Index

McREL currently holds one of ten regional educational laboratory contracts that together make up the Regional Educational Laboratory System , which serves education agencies and schools across the nation. This system represents the U.S. Department of Education's largest research and development investment, designed to help educators, policymakers, and communities improve schools. As is true of all of the regional educational laboratories, McREL is guided by a governing board The focus of the current five-year contract is to help transform low-performing schools into high-performing learning communities and to capture the procedural knowledge necessary to make it happen. To meet this goal, McREL
  • works to address critical problems in the Central Region; serves as a national leader in standards-based educational practice; and collaborates with the other regional educational laboratories.

McREL's educational laboratory work in the Central Region is shaped by the common concerns, issues, and special attributes of the seven states that make up the region. To address these problems, McREL has integrated technical assistance, research, and practical guidance into a scope of work that focuses on four areas:
