Anyway, their profile is a little vague, so I was hoping someone could define the medical terms in "plain English" for us:
    1. "The children's developmental challenges are met with an Individualized Education Plan." (What does this mean? Would they be behind academically, or is it physical/developmental?)
    2. They "...have difficulty focusing on one activity at a time" and "take medication and receive therapeutic services." (For what? Adhd? Something else?)
    3. They also "receive weekly physical, speech, and occupational therapies to help them with coordination, muscle tone, and speech impediments."

    by Peter Farley
AMHERST The inclusive-style classroom may be denying elementary school special needs students the attention they require and the education they deserve, according to some local teachers. But an analysis of available data gives a different picture. Now only one question remains: which method of grouping is most effective in helping students, with and without disabilities, to achieve their expected goals? IDEA requires that disabled students be placed in a setting that constitutes the "least restrictive environment." In other words, the government calls for disabled students to be educated with those who are nondisabled, to the maximum extent appropriate. However, teachers such as Mary Donovan, a fourth-grade instructor at Crocker Farm Elementary School in Amherst, say the law is often misinterpreted. The "least restrictive environment" isn’t always the regular classroom for special needs students, Donovan said.

    Future Critical Issues
The Department of Public Instruction has identified nine major trends and issues that will affect education in North Dakota and impact the Department and the services it provides. These trends provide the impetus for change in the next five years.
    Shifting Demographics
North Dakota has been experiencing a declining population, primarily because of the lack of economic opportunity and the “boom and bust” nature of the state’s primary revenue sources. The declining population is tied very closely to a shrinking tax base, which reduces resources available to provide education services. However, the reduction in population and resources has not reduced the demand for continued education opportunities across the entire state. Because of low salaries, more and more licensed educators are being attracted to other states or choose other fields of employment. North Dakota is experiencing teacher shortages in areas such as special education, mathematics, physical science, bilingual education, music, biological science and foreign languages.

This chapter provides a broad overview of key population groups that will require services from the North Dakota Adult Education and Literacy system and the capacity of adult education programs to provide these services at the local level.

The importance of continuous transition planning stems from the knowledge that proper planning cannot be achieved in 1 year, but rather must occur over numerous years and be based on a continuous comparison from one year to the next. 20 U.S.C. 1414(d)(1)(A)(vii).

The Program Coordinator: Dave Dumas Dave Dumas, Program Coordinator Facing ongoing challenges with at-risk students, those who have difficulty communicating in English, and those who don’t have basic math skills, Mr. Dumas created an environment of collaboration between students and teacher - especially those that are bilingual, and where self-esteem is built through peer education and working together in groups. As a result, all students eventually enjoy some measure of success. Recent graduates have found gainful employment as a direct result of this program, despite the area’s high unemployment rate. Graduates may not always continue in the building trades field, but they all feel that the skills acquired through the program have helped with productivity, creativity and success in their lives.
