Hardie says CAFTA harms North Dakota By Robb Long, Daily News The trade agreement is not good for the country, said Wallace Hardie of Fairmount, secretary/treasurer of the North Dakota Corn Utilization Council and corn grower. He and other North Dakota members of the state Corn Growers Association oppose CAFTA. "It does harm North Dakota agriculture," Hardie said. "Trade is the art of the deal. Too often because it's policy for our nation to trade, we aggressively seek trade with other countries and we stay at the bargaining table much too long because we're anxious to make a deal. The United States needs to step off and say this isn't a good deal for us. We need to be astute on how we make trade deals. "If it's a win for both parties, then it's great. But since it's not, then we need to leave it alone," Hardie said. "An aggressive trading stance puts us at a disadvantage right from the get go. Corn farmers say CAFTA is good for sales. Well, you are going to gain some corn sales but it's not a huge gain, not good enough to jeopardize the main commodity in the United States," Hardie said. The National Corn Growers Association, along with most other commodity groups, welcomes the signing of CAFTA. The pact liberalizes trade rules with El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Marketplace 2005 coming back to Bismarck "Marketplace has grown since it began more than 15 years ago. It has become a statewide symposium for business people, farmers and those who want to start businesses. It has become a major economic development force in North Dakota," Conrad said. "Marketplace has had three wonderful years in Grand Forks; now we will be back this coming year in the Bismarck Civic Center." Johnson agreed. "What began as an informational meeting for a couple hundred farmers and ranchers now attracts thousands of people from across the state," Johnson said. "Marketplace retains a strong agricultural component, but it is now geared to offer ideas, resources and information to anyone who wants to be a player in North Dakota's economic future." Conrad and Johnson are the organizing co-sponsors of Marketplace for Entrepreneurs, which in January drew close to 7,000 people and featured more than 240 exhibitors. This past January, Conrad and Johnson changed the name of the event from Marketplace of Ideas to Marketplace for Entrepreneurs. "The fundamental mission of Marketplace remains the same - to grow North Dakota's economy from within. But we have a new focus on providing the necessary tools, information and practical advice to help bring business ideas to life," Conrad said.

JOHNSON LAUDS FARM BILL PASSAGE BISMARCK - Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson said Monday that passage of the 2002 farm bill is good news for North Dakota producers, giving them needed assurance to carry out their plans for the upcoming growing season. President Bush signed the new farm bill Monday morning. Johnson cautioned that the insistence of mostly southern lawmakers on maintaining unreasonably high limits on farm payments may come back to haunt the agricultural community in the future. Johnson said Dorgan has spoken of limiting farm program payments by attaching amendments to upcoming legislation. MEDIA: For more information, please call Roger Johnson at (701) 328-4754. EPA APPROVES HERBICIDE TO CONTROL THISTLES IN FLAX FIELDS Applicators must observe all instructions, precautions and warnings on the product label and have a copy of the exemption use directions in their possession during application. A 72-hour pre-harvest interval is mandatory.
