Greensboro, North Carolina Teacher Named Regional Winner in National Epidemiology Competition
April 27, 2004 GREENSBORO, N.C. - A Greensboro teacher has been named a regional winner in the Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Teacher Competition for developing a high school curriculum in which students combine geography and high-tech mapping to study local public health issues. Laura Hendrix, who teaches courses in biology, chemistry, and infectious diseases at Greensboro Day School, will receive a $5,000 award for her entry, entitled "The Geography of Public Health: GIS and Epidemiology." GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems, a system of computer software, hardware, and data used to analyze a particular geographical location. Hendrix's curriculum provides an introduction to the use of GIS technology in the study of public health issues, using the community of Greensboro as a model. After obtaining data about public health issues from city and county agencies, students "visualize" the data by producing maps using GIS technology. Students then "layer" a variety of maps to examine relationships between health issuessuch as obesity, cancer, crime, and STD prevalenceand socioeconomic and environmental data such as attained education level, income, poverty rate, and proximity to toxic release sites. Prior to obtaining her teaching certification, Hendrix worked for several years in HIV/AIDS research, including 3 years in Africa running a laboratory for a project in Uganda with the British Medical Research Council.

Teacher Licensure INTRODUCTION
The primary purpose of the Teacher Education Program at Winston-Salem State University is to prepare scholarly, thinking, competent teachers who are capable of developing independent thinkers and learners while maximizing the educational experiences of all children. The motto of the Winston-Salem State University Teacher Education Program reflects its primary goal and expected outcome: Recommendation for North Carolina Teacher Licensure It is the policy of the university that all students recommended for initial licensure comply with the regulations of the university for admission to teacher education, complete a teaching major, and meet the general and professional education requirements for teacher licensure, including three semester hours in an appropriate reading course. The licensing process verifies an individual's qualifications to perform specific professional services as a public school employee, and guarantees that educators in North Carolina meet standards of professional competence. North Carolina statues specify that all professional employees of public schools hold the appropriate license for the subject or grade level taught or for the professional assignment field.

Why was Networking created?
What's the difference between ExplorNet's Networking and Network Essentials?
These are the same thing; the names are interchangeable. Network Essentials is the name we originally used to describe the course as we partnered with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. In some states, administrators use the term 'Essentials' to describe middle school courses and they asked us to change the name. We settled on 'ExplorNet's Networking' as a generic name to put on all our materials. The course may go by another name in any given state's educational system. Does this course map to any existing certifications?

NCLB: Teacher Quality Promising Practices NGA summary of promising state practices regarding No Child Left Behind's highly-qualified teacher provisions and links to more information. By the end of the 2005-06 school year, states must ensure that all teachers of core academic subjects are "highly qualified." In addition, starting in fall 2002, new teachers of core academic subjects in high-poverty schools must meet the definition of "highly qualified." Highly qualified teachers:
    • are fully credentialed (via traditional or alternative certification); can demonstrate competency; and possess a bachelor's degree.
States have developed policies and programs to address the barriers that have traditionally stood in the way of having a highly qualified teacher in every classroom. These initiatives include recruiting new teachers, ensuring teacher quality, promoting teacher retention, and collecting data about gaps in teacher quality. Recruit new teachers
The California School Paraprofessional Teacher Training Program recruits paraprofessionals from the community and provides $3,000 for each participant to receive certification training. Seventy-five percent of the participants must work in high-poverty schools. By reducing unnecessary barriers into the teaching profession, including the creation of career ladders that enable paraprofessionals to become certified classroom teachers, states can maximize the number of new, highly-qualified teachers and meet the goal of having a highly-qualified teacher in every classroom.

Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.
