Don't take this list as an indication that you should only pursue graduate school in North Carolina. You have a much greater chance of acceptance and funding outside of NC. However, practically-speaking, a lot of students don't want to leave town, and if you look at the kinds of quality schools we have, you may not need to look elsewhere. That's why we've included this list, taken from Graduate Study in Psychology.

STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMME:
STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, CHAPEL HILL
for SEMESTER ONE (August - December)
General Background information
The Law School has entered into an exchange arrangement with the Law School of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA. This enables two Manchester students (usually but not always LLB, who may be home or overseas students) to spend the first semester of their third year at that Law School. The examination marks obtained for the courses studied there will count towards the Manchester degree classification. Student Accommodation for Manchester students is guaranteed by UNC, but has to be paid for by the student. Fees for the course are not affected - you will still pay full Manchester fees and nothing to UNC. The arrangement came into force in the 1995-96 session, and Manchester students have taken part every year since then. Each January the Law School will nominate two students to go to UNC in the first semester of the following academic year, (which will be mid-August to mid-December). The two nominees will then complete various procedures including selecting the courses which they wish to take at UNC and these must be approved by the School Board.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS RAILROADS AND BANKS There are in operation within the State 4387 miles of railroads, besides 911 miles of sidings, with a total valuation of $86,347,553, but capitalized for a much larger amount. The state has 321 banks organized under the state law; with an aggregate capital stock of $7,692,767; and 69 national banks with a capital of $6,760,000. The entire recognized state debt is $6,880,950, the greater part of which could be paid by the sale of certain railroad stock held by the state. HISTORY North Carolina was originally inhabited by various tribes of Indians, the three principal ones being the Tuscaroras in the east, the Catawbas in the centre, and the Cherokees in the west. A small body of Cherokees is still located in the mountain section. In 1584 Queen Elizabeth granted to Sir Walter Raleigh the right to discover and hold any lands not inhabited by Christian The Constitution of 1776 had some remarkable provisions. It allowed free negroes to vote because they were "freemen", all slaves, of course, being disfranchised because in law they were considered chattels. Any freeman could vote for the members of the House of Commons; but must own fifty acres of land to vote for a senator, who must himself own at least three hundred acres, and a member at least one hundred acres. The governor must own a freehold of five thousand dollars in value. The borough towns of Edenton, New Bern, Wilmington, Salisbury, Hillsboro, and Halifax were each allowed a separate member in the House of Commons apart from the counties. It declared: That all men have a natural and inalienable right to worship
