History of The University of North Carolina
In North Carolina, all the public educational institutions that grant baccalaureate degrees are part of The University of North Carolina. The University of North Carolina at Asheville is one of 16 constituent senior institutions of the multicampus state university. The University of North Carolina, chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1789, was the first public university in the United States to open its doors and the only one to graduate students in the 18th century. The first class was admitted in Chapel Hill in 1795. For the next 136 years, the only campus of The University of North Carolina was at Chapel Hill. In 1877, the General Assembly began sponsoring additional institutions of higher education, diverse in origin and purpose. Five were historically black institutions and another was founded to educate American Indians. Several were created to prepare teachers for the public schools. Others had a technological emphasis. One is a training school for performing artists. In 1931, the General Assembly redefined The University of North Carolina to include three state-supported institutions: the campus at Chapel Hill (now the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University at Raleigh) and Woman's College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro). The new multicampus University operated with one board of trustees and one president. By 1969, three additional campuses had joined the University through legislative action: the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the University of North Carolina at Asheville and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

History and Enrollment
With 700+ undergraduate students, 50+ graduate students, and approximately 50 faculty members, the School of Art at East Carolina University is the largest art school in North Carolina and one of the largest in the Southeast. Students come from not only North Carolina, but from other states and several foreign countries. More than half of new freshman have had at least two years of art in high school while approximately forty percent have had three or more years.
The East Carolina University School of Art has been an accredited, institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design since 1962. Thirty continuous years of specialized accreditation has resulted in a rigorous curriculum with flexibility and practical applications. The School of Art is currently accredited until the year 2003. It is the only such program in the state of North Carolina and one of approximately 180 across the United States. This recognition is the hallmark of the faculty's dedication to effective teaching and the creation of the professional artist. Commitment
The School of Art is dedicated to the idea that educating men and women in the visual arts constitutes a major responsibility in the total mission of higher education at East Carolina University. The curriculum in both the undergraduate and graduate programs encourages experimentation, the development of ideas, and problem solving in areas such as fine arts, applied arts, art education and art history. The nearly fifty faculty and seven staff members believe that our graduates will make positive contributions to their communities and excel in their chosen professions.

The Wright Brothers were partners in their dream and work. Ohio, their home state and North Carolina, the state where they first realized their dream, are linked in a special partnership to ensure that our students learn about the unique historical connection they have with human powered flight and that they have the opportunities to explore that connection through studies that focus on its scientific and social impact. I. Classroom Photocopying
A. Introduction
B. Guidelines on Multiple Copying for Classroom Use
  • The guidelines embody three standards: brevity, spontaneity, and cumulative effect. The guidelines are printed in the Report of the House Committee on the Judiciary (House Report No. 94-1476) which accompanied the Act. The full text is Appendix A.
  • The purpose of the guidelines is to state the minimum and not the maximum standards of educational fair use under section 107 of H.R. 2223. a. The guidelines are not intended to limit the types of copying permitted under the standards of fair use which are stated in section 107 of the Act, and under judicial decision. b. thus, copying for classroom use that exceeds the guidelines may also be justified in special circumstances under the rubric of fair use.
  • Multiple copies for classroom use Multiple copies (not to exceed in any event more than one copy per pupil in a course) may be made by or for the teacher giving the course for classroom use or discussion, provided that: a. The copying meets the tests of brevity and spontaneity as defined below; and

That’s what NCABR found November 19 with the North Carolina launch of " Science in the Cinema ," a program modeled after the highly popular film and lecture series developed at the National Institutes of Health. The purpose of this program, which drew 265 high school students and members of the general public, was to use a popular film to get North Carolinians thinking and talking about the role of medical science in diagnosing and treating schizophrenia, a devastating mental health disorder. This event, which was the pilot for future NCABR " Science in the Cinema " programs, provoked a lively discussion following the film and received high marks from attendees. Of those who completed a program evaluation, 96 percent said they’d like to attend future " Science in the Cinema " programs.

Directions Board of Directors Services The North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) was founded in 1937 by Dr. Guy B. Phillips, dean of the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Initially, the association was housed in Peabody Hall on the UNC campus. The association offices were moved to Raleigh in 1971 to be closer to the legislature. Currently, the NCSBA is located at 7208 Falls of Neuse Road in North Raleigh. NCSBA Philosophy
    • The best way to educate the populace is through public schools. The most effective way to govern public schools is through local boards of education which are representative of the community. Members of the local boards of education make better decisions when they are educated about their roles and the issues in public education. School board members must recognize and accept the importance of their roles as educational leaders. Local boards of education are responsible for the education of all public school children.

Full-time faculty presently includes three attending surgeons, all holding tenure-track appointments in the Department at Surgery of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. Their primary responsibility is resident education. In October 2003 a fourth surgeon will join the full-time faculty, adding clinical depth to the Trauma-Critical Care service and providing additional support for the educational program. Nine surgeons in two private practices, Wilmington Health Associates and Coastal Carolina Surgical Associates, also support resident education, integrating residents fully in their practices. Both groups perform essentially all their major operations at NHRMC, with resident involvement. Residents rotate through surgical subspecialty services in neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology, urology, plastic surgery, and cardiac surgery. Twenty-six surgeons in all specialties above, except orthopedic surgery, hold part-time clinical appointments in the U.N.C. Department of Surgery. Of this group, nearly all are graduates of U.S. medical colleges (one graduate from Padua, Italy, and one from Johannesburg, South Africa) and all received postgraduate medical training from U.S. medical school-affiliated hospitals. Sixteen received additional training in their respective subspecialties, including such institutions as U.N.C., New York University, Georgetown, Florida, Johns Hopkins, South Carolina, Iowa, Mayo Clinic, Washington University, and the National Cancer Institute.

North Carolina's Attorney General Roy Cooper, the Center for the Prevention of School Violence in North Carolina's Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention , and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction began in early 2000 to generate such tools and promote such collaboration.
