HOUSE BILL 15 GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF NORTH CAROLINA SESSION 2001 SESSION LAW 2001-97 HOUSE BILL 15 AN ACT TO AMEND THE DEFINITION OF A SCHOOL SYSTEM AND AMEND THE RECOMMENDED SCHOOL CLASSIFICATIONS BY ADDING THE DEFINITION OF THE TERM "MIDDLE SCHOOL". The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: SECTION 1. G.S. 115C-74 reads as rewritten: " § 115C-74. School system defined. The school system of each local school administrative unit shall consist of 12 years of study or grades, and shall be graded on the basis of a school year of not less than nine months. Schools within the system may be organized in the discretion of the local board of education. The system may be organized in one or two ways as follows: The first eight grades shall be styled the elementary school and the remaining four grades, the high school; or if more practicable, a junior high school may be formed by combining the first year of high school with both the seventh and eighth grades or with the eighth grade alone, and a senior high school which shall comprise the last three years of high school work. For purposes of Title V of the National Defense Education Act of 1958 (Public Law 85-864) the term "secondary school" shall be applicable to grades seven through 12." SECTION 2.

GED (General Educational Development)
The GED testing program is offered by all 58 community colleges in North Carolina. Cost to students is $7.50 for a test fee. Upon attaining minimum standard scores of 410 on each of the 5 tests and a total score of 2250, a high school diploma equivalency is awarded to the student by the State Board of the Community College System. The GED test consists of five tests (Language Arts Writing, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts Reading, and Mathematics). Requests for scores must be written and contain the name used to take the tests , social security number, telephone number for contact, and current mailing address.

The North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence is an independent, non-profit organization that offers investigative help to prison inmates who claim they did not commit the crime or crimes for which they were convicted.
In evaluating inmate claims and in conducting follow-up investigations, the Center draws upon the work of students and faculty at Duke University School of Law, University of North Carolina School of Law, North Carolina Central University School of Law and Campbell University's Wiggins School of Law. Students from the University of North Carolina's School of Journalism and Mass Communication also participate in the Center's work.

    In North Carolina, all the public educational institutions that grant baccalaureate degrees are part of the University of North Carolina. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is one of the 16 constituent institutions of the multi-campus state university. The University of North Carolina, chartered by the N.C. General Assembly in 1789, was the first public university in the United States to open its doors and the only one to graduate students in the eighteenth century. The first class was admitted in Chapel Hill in 1795. For the next 136 years, the only campus of the University of North Carolina was at Chapel Hill. In 1877, the NC General Assembly began sponsoring additional institutions of higher education, diverse in origin and purpose.     The NCSA Police Department consists of the Chief, Assistant Chief, 12 commissioned officers and 9 part-time security officers. The commissioned officers have the authority to enforce federal, state and local laws, as well as the rules and regulations of the school and the University of North Carolina. All commissioned officers are professionally trained to meet the standards set forth by the Criminal Justice and Standards Division of the State of North Carolina under General Statute 17C. NCSA officers have complete police authority to apprehend and arrest anyone involved in illegal behavior or activities on all school property, as well as on that portion of any public road passing through the campus and immediately adjoining the campus.     General Studies Requirements

    Students applying to the North Carolina School of the Arts must complete in full and submit an application for admission along with an application fee of $45 (U.S. citizens/permanent resident) or $90 for international applicants. All applicants must submit the following documentation with their applications:
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation; Transcript(s) with a validated seal or signature of a school official or Registrar along with courses in progress, if applicable; SAT or ACT scores (for applicants applying to the undergraduate program); A 2x2 photograph (for identification purposes); A resume detailing artistic experience and educational objectives.

    All applicants should thoroughly read the admission requirements and the guidelines for the specific department in which he/she wishes to study.
