Columbia School Of Journalism Flunks Immigration
By Joe Guzzardi Columbia President Lee C. Bollinger’s announcement that the Graduate School of Journalism will be revamped has created a stir among journalism’s elites. A task force, studded with stars like former New York Times managing editor Eugene L. Roberts, Jr., Ken Auletta, The New Yorker’s Nicholas Lemann and Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Quindlen, has met five times to evaluate which direction the prestigious school should take. The preliminary conclusion: to expand the current one-year program to two years. During the first year, students will concentrate on basic skills, journalism history and literature. In the second year, students can choose special fields of study—religion, the arts, international affairs or sciences But the task force rejected a curriculum that would include professional ethics and media criticism.

CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries
As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care."

On April 15-16, 2004, the Center on Law, Ethics and National Security at Duke Law School will once again be hosting its very popular annual spring conference. View information about the conference.
The Center is pleased to present, " Congressional Oversight of Intelligence: Some Reflections on the Last 25 Years " by Britt Snider. This is the first in a series of occasional articles and monographs to be published.
WHO WE ARE
T he Center on Law, Ethics and National Security was founded at Duke University's School of Law on September 1st, 1993, by Robinson O. Everett, a professor of law at Duke and a former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. As an integral part of the Law School, the Center encourages and sponsors teaching, research and publications concerning national security law topics, and also conducts conferences and seminars in the national security field. Additionally, as the Center's name implies, it also seeks to provide a legal focus on national security issues from an ethical perspective. The Center on Law, Ethics and National Security is privately funded, drawing its financial support from foundation grants and other donations. OUR COMMITMENT TO TEACHING
The wide range of topics and issues which fall under the rubric of national security law continues to expand in virtually geometric proportions, and events that capture daily headlines or become the lead stories on the nightly news continue to have a dramatic effect upon national security decision-making.

Library media centers now offer students, teachers, and other members of the learning community access to a wide range of information delivered through a variety of media, including books, the Internet, digital information, and multimedia. The Standards committee completed their work of developing the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification for Library Media. These standards have been approved by the Board and media folks around the country are piloting parts of the assessment. It is expected that the first round of certification will be ready for the 2001-2002 school year. The final standards are available for purchase from the National Board http://www.nbpts.org This site is to keep library media professionals abreast of the events and hopefully to provide a medium of communication as many pilot parts of the assessment and later begin their certification process. Visit often as links open to help those seeking certification and as we begin some of the most important discussions concerning our profession this decade.

Photo caption: Natural daylight streams into a media center (above), creating a well-lit space that appeals to both students and faculty of these North Carolina schools. Division of Energy photo
By Julie Smither , Division of Energy Last fall, a group of Kentucky architects and school officials planning new school construction visited three schools in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina to learn about high-performance, energy-efficient design and the feasibility of applying it to their construction projects.
High-performance schools are designed on an integrated, holistic approach, resulting in buildings that are energy efficient and cost effective. Initial costs are typically the same or only slightly higher than conventional buildings because of this integrated design. For instance, properly designed daylighting can reduce or eliminate the need for electric illumination in a classroom. If lights, which generate heat, are not on as often, cooling equipment can be downsized, resulting in lower initial construction costs.
This gymnasium is also created with an energy-efficient design, providing sufficient lighting from ceiling windows. Division of Energy photo

W att Watchers is a free, state sponsored program designed to help school districts save energy dollars. The Watt Watchers' program provides an educationally enriched experience for students. The program enlists students to look for energy waste in their schools by patrolling the hallways looking for empty classrooms with the lights on. The students turn out the lights and leave a reminder "ticket" for the teacher. Students can also close exterior doors, report stuck flush valves, implement power management in computers, and more. Big Bucks Are At Stake
The second biggest expenditure for most school districts is energy. More money is spent on energy than on computers and books combined. Watt Watchers can help cut energy use and save money for their schools. Students get involved in a program that makes a real difference and cuts pollution.
