    Required Tests
    How to Qualify for Teacher Licensure
    Qualifying for teacher licensure requires completing an approved teacher education program. Applicants to a program must earn a satisfactory score on the Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST Effective July 1, 2000, licensure requires satisfactory completion of a Performance-Based Licensure (PBL) Program and one or more Praxis II: Subject Assessments or Specialty Area tests. See below for a complete listing of currently required tests. If another subject area is added to the initial license, a candidate must complete the appropriate subject assessment for that area. Candidates pursuing alternate routes for licensure must satisfy the same testing requirements as candidates in traditional programs.

    Welcome The North Carolina Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA) serves scholastic journalism and works for its advancement. Member schools include junior high and high schools from across the state. A few elementary schools are also members.
    NCSMA offers members special services, including a four-day summer institute, fall and spring regional workshops, publication critiques and yearly contests for individuals and publications. The organization also mails members a newsletter during the school year.
    Advisers may call on the director to conduct one- or two-day workshops in their schools or to work with them on special programs they wish to conduct in their schools or areas. Membership in NCSM Advisers Association is $10 for the annual period Aug. 1 - July 31. Prospective members may also pay $45 for membership in Journalism Education Association, an affiliation that carries with it the report of the Student Press Law Center and access to the center's legal advice.
