ABOUT US CONTACT This is an area rich in history, culture, natural beauty and recreational opportunity. While plenty of other websites cover recreation, dining and attractions for our coast, we'll be bringing you info especially pertaining to the natural world and the local ecology as we explore the coastal zone. NCNatural Coastal Features
Coastal Dynamics
Geologically speaking, our beaches are not very old, and the historical records shows that they are very changeable. Coastal Dynamics offers a primer to some of the forces at work around the islands.

Significant Natural Areas
If you like your ecology on the wild side, we have some islands for you. Just getting there can be an adventure in itself. Many of our barrier islands are only accessible by boat. But, if you're a little bit more comfort oriented, there are also plenty of opportunities to explore the coastal regions with a lot less hardship and in close proximity to soft beds and good restaurants. There is so much to choose from that we had to break it into sections;
Northern Beaches
From the Virginia State line south to Shackleford Banks near Beaufort. This stretch of beach covers the Outer Banks and the Core Banks, including two National Seashores; Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Cape Lookout National Seashore. The northern section of this part features plenty of motels and recreation with easy accessibility, but the Core Banks in the south is at the extreme opposite end of the comfort zone. It is probably the wildest and most extreme coastal ecology in eastern America.

92. North Carolina Climate & Georgraphy
Climate While north carolina is located in a warm temperate zone, its diverseregions can experience a great variety of weather conditions.
http://www.secretary.state.nc.us/kidspg/geog.htm
From Manteo in the east to Murphy in the west, North Carolina is 560 miles wide, making it the widest state east of the Mississippi. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Tennessee on the west, Virginia to the north, and South Carolina and Georgia to the south, North Carolina is divided into three distinct geographic areas: the Coastal Plain in the east, the Piedmont in the center, and Mountains in the west. The Coastal Plain
The low, flat land of North Carolina's eastern region stretches from the sandy farmland of the Inner Coastal Plain to the state's Outer Banks, a string of barrier islands separated from the mainland by sounds or inlets. The Outer Banks has three capes Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, and Cape Fear. The Piedmont Piedmont is a French word meaning "foot of the mountain," and North Carolina's Piedmont region is sometimes referred to as "the foothills." The rolling hills of this region range in elevation from just 300 feet in the east to 1,500 feet near the mountains. The Piedmont is sometimes referred to as a plateau because it is high and mostly flat. The Mountains
Western North Carolina's majestic landscape features the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains, which help make up the Appalachian Mountains, possibly the oldest mountain range in the United States. The region is also home to Mount Mitchell. Rising 6,684 feet above sea level, Mount Mitchell is the tallest peak east of the Mississippi River. The Eastern Continental Divide runs along the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains, separating the rivers flowing east from those flowing west. Rivers that fall on the eastern side of the divide flow toward the Atlantic Ocean while those on the western side of the divide flow toward the Tennessee and Ohio rivers and into the Gulf of Mexico.

North Carolina Pottery
North Carolina has had a pottery industry since colonial times. Potters settled in the Catawba Valley before the Civil War. Today there are many traditional folk potters working in the Catawba Valley and surrounding areas. Potters are located in Valdese, Lenoir, Hickory, Morganton, Lincolnton, and Vale. Today the Catawba Valley is known as one of the Folk pottery centers of the nation. More than a dozen potters throw traditional alkaline glazed wares, and there are many studio potters in the area as well. The majority of the Catawba Valley potters are concentrated along Highway 10, Southeast of Hickory, between Newton and Vale. Burlon Craig, perhaps the best known of the Southern Folk potters, passed away in 2002. Steve Abee, Charles Lisk, Kim Ellington, Albert Hodge, Joe Reinhardt, Michelle Flowers, Ben Allman, Walter Fleming, Ray Hicks, Richard Kale, Bolick Pottery, and many others all have potteries in the area. North Carolina Pottery takes many forms. The picture above shows an assortment of NC pottery, the jug in the middle front is a traditional whiskey jug, probably dating to the late 1800s, the blue and tan pitcher is a Hilton blue edge piece, the small swirl jug and large snake face jug are by Burlon Craig, and the large Tobacco Spit jar in the back is by an unknown Catawba Valley Potter. Tobacco Spit is how some collectors refer to the ash alkaline glaze used on traditional Catawba Valley Pottery.

Climate Change: A Survey of North Carolina Business Leaders
May 11, 2004 A new survey of North Carolina’s most politically active business executives suggests that they do not agree with the current direction of public policy in the state. A sample of about 300 respondents from every region of North Carolina answered questions about fiscal policy, education, transportation, tax rates, regulation, and ways to improve economic competitiveness. This report provides not only data from the statewide sample but also from six regional subgroups: the Research Triangle, the Piedmont Triad, the Charlotte area, Northeastern North Carolina, Southeastern North Carolina, and Western North Carolina.
Among the major findings in the “Climate Change” survey were:
• About half of business executives see North Carolina’s prospects for economic growth in the coming years to be “excellent” or “good” and about half see the prospects as “fair” or “poor.” However, this split decision actually masks important regional differences on the issue: about 60 percent or more of respondents in the Charlotte and Triangle areas were optimistic about the prospects for growth while about 60 percent of respondents in Western and Northeastern North Carolina were pessimistic.
• Asked which factors were most harmful to the state’s competitive position, respondents picked North Carolina’s high state and local tax burden as the number-one impediment to economic growth. An onerous regulatory burden, a lack of skilled workers, and inadequate education were also cited as significant factors. Airports, port and rail service, and recreational and leisure amenities were considered the least important.

Thunderstorms More Frequent In The Sandhills Region!
For the official AP release click HERE Recent research at the State Climate Office of North Carolina suggests that thunderstorms occur more frequently in the Sandhills Region of North and South Carolina. The Carolina and Georgia Sandhills region of the Southeast is an elongated area of sandy soil that is located adjacent to regions of varying soil type. The Piedmont area to the northeast has soils that are mainly loam and clay-loam, while a variety of soil types exists in the Coastal Plain to the southeast. It is the differences in these soil types that create differential heating of the surface. Areas with sandy soil will more easily release their moisture to the area, allowing for a higher sensible heat flux than loam or clay-loam soils. This allows more energy to be used for heating the surface rather than evaporating moisture in the soil. Also, the heat capacity for sand is much less than that of clay or loam, so that given the same amount of energy, sandy soil would increase in temperature more than the loam or clay soils.
