CN Programs Make News by Making Changes April 20, 2004 - From North Dakota to North Carolina, school-based child nutrition programs are making changes that are resulting in healthy school environments. From expanding breakfast at Olmsted Falls School District ( OH) to replacing foods of minimal nutritional value in vending machines at Santa Barbara High School (CA) with yogurt smoothies and 100% fruit juice, child nutrition professionals are working with students, parents, administrators and the community to increase healthy food options in schools. In the past ten days alone, news outlets from the San Francisco Chronicle editorial page to KXMC TV 13 News in Minot, ND, have reported the good news on school nutrition programs. This media coverage represents only a small portion of the many successful child nutrition programs that provide nutritious, balanced meals to over 33 million children daily. The Medical Center
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center
The North Carolina Baptist Hospital is an 806-bed regional treatment and referral center located on the Hawthorne Campus. The Wake Forest University School of Medicine and The North Carolina Baptist Hospitals, Incorporated, together constitute The Medical Center, which is under the overall supervision of a joint board of university trustees and trustees of the North Carolina Baptist Hospitals, Incorporated. Other units of The Medical Center include the Brenner Children's Hospital, the School of Allied Health, and the Northwest Area Health Education Center. The Executive Vice President for Health Affairs/Executive Dean is responsible for the operation of the medical school to the President of Wake Forest University. The medical school and hospital buildings join to form a single unit, resulting in close correlation of clinical and basic medical science in both teaching and research. The Medical Center recently completed its $200-million Equation for Progress building program, adding an eleven-story Clinical Sciences Building, a fifteen-story hospital wing (North Tower), and a six-floor addition to the Hanes Research Building. The Nursing Center at Oak Summit, a 170-bed facility for skilled and intermediate nursing care, opened off campus in mid-July 1993. Three additional major construction projects are in progress: the J. Paul Sticht Institute for Rehabilitation and Aging, the eleven-floor Center for Research on Human Nutrition and Chronic Disease Prevention, and a ten-floor emergency department/dietary services building.
