The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) advocates national policies and programs to promote healthy eating and physical activity to help reduce the illnesses, disabilities, premature deaths, and costs caused by diet- and inactivity-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. NANA promotes within the legislative and executive branches of government a better understanding of the importance of healthy eating, physical activity, and obesity control to the nation's health and health-care costs. One of the primary goals of NANA is to cultivate champions for nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention in Congress and federal agencies. Efforts include supporting effective education programs, advocating adequate funding for programs, and promoting environmental changes that help Americans eat better and be more active. NANA is made up of more than 250 organizations. NANA's policy priorities include:

Through Nutrition and Physical Activity
Six states recently were awarded CDC funds for establishing "State Nutrition and Physical Activity Programs to Prevent Obesity and Related Chronic Diseases." The Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity at CDC is pleased to work with the following states on this program.
The purpose of the program is to prevent and control obesity and related chronic diseases by supporting States in the development and implementation of nutrition and physical activity interventions, particularly through population-based strategies such as policy-level change, environmental supports, and the social marketing planning process. Each of the awarded States below will (a) develop a plan for the priority population(s) they select, (b) develop appropriate internal and external partnerships to carry out the plan, and (c) develop, conduct, and evaluate nutrition and physical activity intervention projects in the population(s).
For more information about these projects, contact Sarah Kuester, Public Health Nutritionist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Email: sak2@cdc.gov

School Nutrition The nutrition component supports the integration of nutritious, affordable and appealing meals; nutrition education; and an environment that promotes healthful eating behaviors for all children. School nutrition services should be designed to maximize each child's education and health potential for a lifetime. This is most effectively achieved when the cafeteria, classroom and community work as a team. The Nutrition Component promotes:
  • Access to a variety of nutritious, culturally appropriate foods that promote growth and development, pleasure in healthful eating, and long-term health, the prevention of school day hunger and its consequent lack of attention to learning tasks Nutrition education that empowers students to select and enjoy healthful food and physical activity Screening, assessment, counseling and referral for nutrition problems and the provision of modified meals for students with special needs.
Goal: To improve the health, nutritional well-being and academic performance of North Carolina's students through coordinated and comprehensive nutrition policies that enhance the school classroom, cafeteria and community environment and support lifelong healthful eating habits. Eat Smart, Move More

Health Services Analysis Team
The Health Services Analysis Team (HSAT) is located within the Statistical Services Unit of the State Center for Health Statistics. The HSAT works in partnership with North Carolina health agencies to provide program managers with timely statistical information that will be used to inform decisions about the health-management of populations, cost-effectiveness of programs, quality of care, and cost management and accountability. The goal is to improve health programs in North Carolina, resulting in better health for our citizens. One important use of health services data is to identify emerging morbidity and mortality patterns. Often, this process is facilitated by combining a program's health service data with birth, death, or other health records, to get a broader understanding of the health status of North Carolina populations. The HSAT also provides researchers in other agencies and university settings with assistance in research design and with data files for public health evaluation and research projects.

Government Hunger Programs
There are many government programs that seek to assist the hungry or those at risk of hunger. Speakers should have a basic familiarity with each of the following government assistance programs: The Food Stamp Program Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) Social Security Supplemental Security Income (SSI) The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) distributes surplus food commodities (via the USDA) to states, which then distribute the food through local programs. 3.8 million households were served by TEFAP in 1997, and 117 million pounds of food were distributed in 1996. The 1997 federal funding of TEFAP was $179 million. In North Carolina, the TEFAP program is administered by NCDA and distributed by the six Second Harvest food banks. National School Lunch Program National School Breakfast Program Summer Food Service Program is an entitlement program that provides funds to organizations that serve nutritious meals to low-income children when school is out. In the summer of 1998, 2.2 million children were served at 29,000 sites operated by 3,500 community organizations. Fifteen percent of the low-income children who receive free and reduced-price lunches participate in this program. The cost in 1998 was $261 million.

The Nutrition Services area of the Marion County Health Department includes two programs: the Community Nutrition Program and the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program. Both programs are aimed at addressing the various nutrition needs of the community through education about healthy eating habits that correspond to individuals' particular culture. COMMUNITY NUTRITION PROGRAM Because diet is linked to several chronic diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, and some cancers, the staff works together with the Chronic Disease section on the ABC'S OF DIABETES PROGRAM and the HEART ALIVE! PROGRAM. Staff also provides nutrition services to school based and adolescent clinics, offering group education and individual counseling. Nutritionists provide information at various health fairs in the community and they are frequently asked to speak to a variety of groups on many different nutrition topics. The 5-A-DAY FOR BETTER HEALTH PROGRAM is an elementary school curriculum that is very popular among students. This curriculum, developed by staff in the department, has been used for several years to teach children about the importance of including fruits and vegetables in their diets through fun hands-on activities and an opportunity via "tasting parties" to try new foods. This curriculum is nationally recognized and used throughout the country.
