On January 9, 2003, the State Board of Education passed the Healthy Active Children policy HSP-S-000. The following is provided as an overview of the policy. The actual policy will follow.

Local School Health Advisory Committee In order for this policy to be fully implemented by the 2006 - 2007 school year, schools should: · establish and maintain local School Health Advisory Councils to represent the eight components of a coordinated school health program. (Information about school health councils can be found at www.nchealthyschools.org. NC Healthy Schools and DPI will be providing workshops on School Health Advisory Councils this coming year.); · conduct a needs assessment on health services and programs; · provide an action plan to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction by July 15, 2004; and · provide progress reports by July 15, 2005 and 2006.

I ndian and Native American WIC Programs provide much-needed nutrition and health benefits to over 57,000 Native American women, infants and children each month, according to the Food Research and Action Center's (FRAC) new publication, "WIC in Native American Communities: Building a Healthier America." The report reviews 25 years of health and nutrition progress driven by WIC; analyzes previously unpublished government data on the extent of Native American health and hunger; and provides new data profiles of 31 Indian and Native American WIC programs. WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children and is also called the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program. WIC is a federal program designed to provide food to low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children until the age of five. The program provides a combination of nutrition education supplemental foods breastfeeding promotion and support , and referrals for health care . WIC has proven effective in preventing and improving nutrition related health problems within its population. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds the WIC Program . The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Public Health Women's and Children's Health Section Nutrition Services Branch administers it. County health departments, community and rural health centers, and community action agencies provide the services. To obtain additional referral forms, pamphlets, or other information contact your county health department or the NC Family Health Resource line at 1-800-FOR-BABY (1-800-367-2229) between 8 am - 5 pm, Monday - Friday.

NC Healthy Weight Initiative The mission of the NC Healthy Weight Initiative is to shape the eating and physical activity patterns of North Carolina children and youth in ways that lead to healthy weight and reduce the risk for chronic disease. The NC Task Force for Healthy Weight in Children and Youth created a comprehensive state plan, Moving Our Children Toward a Healthy Weight Finding the Will and the Way , that provides recommendations for action to address childhood overweight.
Obesity Prevention at School: Standards Set for All Food
The North Carolina Healthy Weight Initiative announces the release of Eat Smart: North Carolina's Recommended Standards for All Foods Available in School The Standards address not only foods and beverages found in traditional cafeteria meals, but also a la carte items, vending machines drinks and snacks, and foods and beverages served in after school programs and at school functions. Three state agenciesthe North Carolina Division of Public Health, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Servicecollaborated to create this document. Local education agencies are encouraged to use the Standards to craft food policies that will contribute to students nutritional well-being and health.

Fax: (919) 733-1384 or (919) 715-8795 Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System At the national level the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducts the surveillance activities by collecting and analyzing data from the states that contributes to the PNSS. Currently there are about 25 states that participate in CDC's surveillance system. The CDC also publishes the annual surveillance report at the national level. The PNSS monitors the prevalence of nutrition problems and behavioral risk factors among women at high risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes who are enrolled in the public health programs. North Carolina's Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System (PNSS) links data from the WIC program, public maternity clinics, birth certificates and fetal death certificates. These data are collected at the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC Program) and prenatal clinics funded by the Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant) to the State of North Carolina and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Dietetic Internship
PROGRAM:
The Dietetic Internship is designed to provide the clinical experiences established by the Standards of Education of the American Dietetic Association. Students who successfully complete the Internship are eligible to take the national registration examination to become registered dietitians. Students completing the Dietetic Internship are qualified to practice entry level dietetics in clinical, administrative and/or community settings. The Dietetic Internship provides 9 credits of graduate coursework comprised of three 9-week (40 hours per week) practicum courses (administrative, clinical, and community dietetics). The Dietetic Internship is an elective component of the graduate degree requirements for a Master's of Health Sciences (MHS) degree with a specialization concentration in Nutrition. Admission to the MHS degree program in the Graduate School at Western Carolina University is required prior to selective admission into the Dietetic Internship, but completion of the MHS degree is not required. An ADA-accredited undergraduate Didactic Program in Dietetics is also offered at Western Carolina University. Some DPD requirements may be completed at the graduate level (400/500-level courses). The WCU Dietetic Internship participates in the preselect option to computer matching. In the preselect process, the program can select 3 students per year who have met the admission requirements for the DI. The program has the option to fill the remaining 3 positions through the computer match. For those who plan to participate in the preselect process, December 23 is the postmark deadline for applications. The applicant will be notified on or before February 1, 2003 confirming her/his acceptance or rejection into the program through the preselect process.
