Norfolk, Virginia Customize E-mail newsletters MySpecialsDirect Home ... What's New Thursday at the General Assembly Associated Press House _ Co-Speaker Richard Morgan, R-Moore, sounded sympathetic to supporters of a later starting date for schools, but stopped short of endorsing a bill filed in the House. Senate leader Marc Basnight and Jim Black, the other House co-speaker, said earlier this week they backed the idea pushed by the tourism industry and many parents. A bill recommended last month by a legislative committee would require local school systems to begin classes no earlier than Aug. 25 and end by June 10 unless they have unusual weather circumstances. Morgan said he hasn't read the legislation but understands the concerns of those pushing the proposal. Local school boards have opposed legislation that would give Raleigh control over when they could start and end school. The North Carolina Association of Educators is waiting to poll its member teachers before deciding about this bill. The association last year opposed a bill that would have ordered schools to being after Labor Day. Senate END

The Honorable William Aiken - Governor of SC. Passed on to his daughter Mrs. A. In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. contact us if you have a link you think should be included, if you would like to volunteer to do lookups or if you have suggestions or comments..

CAREER SERVICES Career Services The School of Law assists students in seeking employment through its Career Services Office. The Career Services Office offers career planning and placement services to all students and alumni. The School of Law participates in two special placement programs. The North Carolina State Bar Plan for Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts (IOLTA) sponsors summer internships for five students to work with a public interest organization in North Carolina. During these internships, students work with persons who are unable to afford legal counsel. This program helps to lay the foundation for commitment to public service. The other special placement program is the North Carolina Bar Association's Minorities in the Profession Committee Minority Summer Law Clerkship Program. This program seeks to enhance the opportunities for minorities to obtain summer clerkships with major law firms in the state.
