Article IX, Section 3 of the North Carolina Constitution states: "The General Assembly shall provide that every child of appropriate age and of sufficient mental and physical ability shall attend the public schools, unless educated by other means." There are currently only two "other means" of satisfying the State of North Carolina compulsory attendance law: The child attending a conventional non-public school which meets the requirements for such a school; or, the child attending a home school (taught by the parent/guardian) which meets the requirements for that type of non-public school.
