At the core of the collection is the library of William R. Valentiner, the first director of the Museum. Gifts from a later director, Justus Bier, also enriched the early growth of the Library. The Library's emphasis is on Western European and American art, in support of the Museum's primary collections. The Library holds approximately 30,000 volumes, including books, auction and exhibition catalogs, CD-ROMs, videos and nearly 100 current periodical subscriptions. A publications exchange program with more than 300 museums worldwide augments the collection. Books added since 1980 are included in the online public access catalog, which is part of the North Carolina State Library's OPAC. The Art Reference Library catalogs materials using the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN) databases. Periodical holdings and on-order records are not included. About the N.C. Room
Visit the North Carolina (NC) Room for information and resources dealing with genealogy (family history), local history, travel, biography, folklore, the Winston-Salem Journal, Sentinel, and Chronicle on microfilm, Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, and North Carolina history, the Photograph Collection, and local/state laws. Opened in 1975, the North Carolina Room houses many rare and out-of-print resources for the study and preservation of local and state history. Because of the special nature of these materials, this is a non-circulating reference collection (which means you have to use our collection in the building). Our staff of professional librarians is ready to assist you in finding answers to your questions about Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, and North Carolina. Everyone is welcome to use the collection. Please stop by the reference desk and introduce yourself.
Genealogy - Climbing Family Trees
The North Carolina collection contains approximately 3000 volumes of abstracted records and family histories. While most of these books relate directly to North Carolina, many concern adjoining states or areas from which there was considerable migration into North Carolina. There is also a small collection of books relating to heraldry and coats-of-arms.

U. of North Carolina Gets $4-Million to Expand 'Public Library of the Internet'
By FLORENCE OLSEN The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's MetaLab, one of the busiest digital libraries on the Internet, on Monday received a $4-million gift and a new name, ibiblio.org. Its benefactor says the gift will help the site develop its unique character as "the public library of the Internet." The Red Hat Center, a private foundation in Durham, N.C., made the gift and announced a five-year joint project with the university to expand ibiblio. Robert Young, who is one of the founders of the Linux software company Red Hat, says ibiblio demonstrates the value of free public libraries and exemplifies the ideals of the open-source movement. The movement maintains that knowledge, unlike real property, should be free. Linux is an open-source computer operating system created by volunteers from all over the world. Consisting of computer code that is publicly available, it has attracted a considerable amount of interest as an alternative to Microsoft's Windows products. The university's enormous library server, which handles an average of 1.5 million transactions daily, is one of the largest repositories of Linux software and software documentation. "Developers and programmers around the world take this stuff for granted but value it highly," Mr. Young says.
