NORTH CAROLINA COLLECTION
The main locations of the Gaston County Public Library and the Lincoln County Public Library both house a North Carolina Collection. These are non-circulating reference collections of historical and cultural materials that focus primarily on Gaston and Lincoln Counties but include North Carolina as a whole. Lesser emphasis is given to bordering states such as South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee. Resources The North Carolina Collections offers the following resources:
  • Books and PeriodicalsBoth libraries collect material focusing on the history and genealogy of their area and also contain general genealogical resources. Gaston County history can be found at 975.677, and Lincoln County history at 975.678. The collection at Gastonia includes city directories for Gastonia back to 1910 and county cross references for Gaston County back to 1973. In addition, the Gaston County location houses an eight volume James Worthy Scrapbook created by Scott Lewis.
  • The online is an index to biographical material that is "buried" within books in our collections. More entries are being added to these pages as staff members have time.

If you are a writer, you are not alone. Literary Hall of Fame The North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame Inducts Three Authors in 2004 The Writers' Network is proud to announce the three newest inductees of the Literary Hall of Fame: fiction writer Doris Betts, journalist Tom Wicker, and poet James McGirt (deceased). Like all the other 36 inductees of this important biennial event, these writers have strong connections to North Carolina, although their reputations extend throughout the nation and beyond. Betts, Wicker and McGirt will be honored at the Weymouth Center in Southern Pines, NC on Sunday, October 17, 2004 at 2 pm. More details will be available soon. The North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame Inducts Five Authors in 2002 NC Poet Laureate, Fred Chappell presided at the 2002 induction of Reynolds Price and Elizabeth Spencer. Also honored posthumously were Glen Rounds, of Southern Pines, LeGette Blythe, of Charlotte, and Christian Reid (Frances Fisher), of Salisbury. The large upstairs room at Weymouth that houses the Hall of Fame was refurbished in time for the ceremony, thanks to a generous donation by the Women of Weymouth of recessed lighting, new paint, a refinished floor, and a re-hanging of the portraits of all thirty-six inductees.
