31. Tobacco History
Brief outline, based on materials in the north carolina State University libraries.
http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/archives/exhibits/tobacco/thistory.html
Tobacco History Tobacco is related to garden vegetables, flowers, weeds, and poisonous herbs such as potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, petunias, jimson wood, ground cherries, and nightshade. The family of plants is Solanaceae; the genus Nicotiana contains about 100 species, only two of which have been extensively cultivated. Nicotiana tabacam is used in cigarettes and tobacco and is the predominant type of crop tobacco. Originally, Native Americans in the eastern United States grew Nicotiana rustica, which was the first form of tobacco introduced in England and Portugal. N. Tabacam, first introduced to the Spanish, was obtained from Mexico and South America. It has been the preferred tobacco since settlers in Jamestown, Virginia, began growing it. Because planters believed that tobacco had to be grown on virgin soil, tobacco gradually made its way to the eastern part of what is now North Carolina. Consumer preferences for tobacco products changed decidedly from the early 1700's. Carl Linnaeus describes tobacco in this 1762 edition of Caroli Linnaei Species plantarum, exhibentes plantas rite cognitas, ad general relatas, cum differentiis specificis, nominibus trivialibus, synonymis selectis, locis natalibus, secundum system a sexuale digestas

37. North Carolina Genealogy
Offers research services in the libraries at Duke University and UNCChapel Hill.
http://members.aol.com/uncjud/genealogy.html

Research Services covering all counties in North Carolina Services provided by Jud Campbell About Me: I am currently a student at UNC-Chapel Hill. I have been doing genealogical research for five years. I have experience with article preparation as well as professional research. My primary regional focus has been North Carolina and New England. I am currently doing genealogical research on Orange County and Durham County North Carolina families from 1752 to about 1880. I follow the guidelines for research presented within the BCG Standards Manual. I will give you honest and quality work for prices much lower than a usual professional genealogist. Services Available: I will perform lookups in specific books selected by the customer or research on a particular subject as specified by the customer. Requests should be specific enough that a reasonable search is possible. You should be aware that I am not a professional genealogist. Rather, I am a college student who has genealogical experience and talent as well as immediate access to extensive resources on North Carolina genealogy. You may wish to use me as a first option before going to a more expensive genealogist with more expertise and resources. Available Resources: The resources that I use are those that are available in the libraries of Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the State Library of North Carolina.
