Microsoft and North Carolina Plaintiffs Settle North Carolina Class Action Lawsuits Settlement Will Benefit Consumers and North Carolina Schools RALEIGH, N.C., and REDMOND, Wash. Nov. 6, 2003 The settlement, which last Thursday received preliminary approval from the North Carolina Business Court, will make vouchers available to class members that may be used to buy any manufacturer's desktop, laptop and tablet computers, any software available for sale to the general public and used with those computer products, and specified peripheral devices for use with computers. If all class members claim and are issued the vouchers for which they are eligible under the settlement, the maximum value of the vouchers issued to class members will total approximately $89 million. It is estimated that approximately 1,000 schools, just under half of all K12 schools in North Carolina, will be eligible to receive assistance. This represents nearly 45 percent of all North Carolina students.

Posted Saturday, December 20, 2003 Welcome to the Dare County Schools website. Not only is Dare County a beautiful place to live, we also have some of the finest schools in North Carolina. Just as the area has a rich history, the public schools in Dare County also have a tradition of providing students with quality education. Our nine schools, which serve approximately 4,700 students, provide Dare County's children with a wealth of opportunities. The Dare County Schools motto is "Educate Every Child," and our teachers and staff are committed to that standard. Excellent Teachers Within our nine schools you will find some of the most talented and dedicated teachers in the state. Approximately 35 percent of our local teachers hold graduate degrees, and 23 teachers have National Board Certification. Several of our teachers have won state awards including:
  • A teacher at Manteo Middle School was named the 2002-2003 Outstanding English Teacher of the Year by the North Carolina English Teachers Association.

Posted Tuesday, February 24, 2004 Manteo Middle School hosted the North Carolina Technology Student Association Northeast Regional Competition on Saturday, February 21, despite it being a make-up day for Dare County Schools staff and students. Technology Student Association (TSA) is comprised of middle and high school students across the nation. In a hugely successful day, all of the Manteo Middle School and Manteo High School members that participated in the Saturday Regionals qualified to go to state NCTSA competition in Greensboro, NC April 4-6, 2004 by placing in the top three in one or more events. Manteo Middle School Career and Technical Education teacher, Laura Hummell, is the driving force behind TSA at both Roanoke Island schools. Hummell was not only appreciative of the efforts made by advisors, parents, and staff members, but also for the flexibility of MMS faculty by accommodating the competition while classes were in session. The MMS TSA chapter includes: Trevor Clark, Hannah Davenport, Meredith Dunnigan, Kelly Edens, Emily Gamiel, Leslie Hammill, Tess Harrell, Sami Kirkpatrick, Kelly Krauss, Rebeca McKay, Mitzy Minton, Michael Muse, Sarah Rhodes, Andrew Simansky, and Bree Tillett.

Travel New York City June 2003 Report Shows North Carolina Leading the Nation in Closing the Achievement Gap North Carolina is a national leader in student achievement gains by African-Americans, Latinos, and white students on national exams according to a report released recently by the Washington, DC-based, The Education Trust. The report, Education Watch, details student achievement and other indicators of student performance in the 50 states. In 2001, the National Education Goals reported that North Carolina lead the nation in progress in 4th and 8th grade math in the decade of the 1990’s. This most recent report shows that not only did North Carolina lead the nation in progress overall, but its African-American and Latino 4th grade students were making more gains in math than their peers in all other states and were among the nation’s leaders in gains in reading. North Carolina ranked first in the nation in gains for African-American, Latino, and white students on both the 4th and 8th grade NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) math exams. On the 4th grade reading exam, North Carolina ranked second in gains among Latinos on the 8th grade science assessment.#
