42. Networking K-12 Education
The ferment in north carolina reflects distance learning linking our nation s schools, libraries, universities
http://www.nap.edu/readingroom/books/techgap/K-12net.html
In North Carolina, classrooms are becoming "virtual" as learning goes long distance. Using the initial links in a high-speed digital video network that will soon connect over 3,400 North Carolina classrooms, colleges, libraries, hospitals, and government offices, students are learning foreign languages, mathematics, and science from teachers hundreds of miles away. Professors at colleges of education are observing and counseling student teachers over the network. High school teachers are participating in subject matter workshops and development seminars without leaving their schools. High school groups and clubs are using the network to conduct long-distance joint meetings after school hours. The ferment in North Carolina reflects distance learning experiments that are taking shape across the country. Using the National Geographic Kids Network, students are comparing environmental data they have gathered, such as the acidity of their local rainfall, with similar measurements made by students around the world. Through the Jason Project, oceanographer Robert Ballard is interacting with hundreds of thousands of students in real time as they view images from undersea submersibles-even as scientists use the submersibles to do research in such places as the Mediterranean Sea or mid-ocean ridges. During the Gulf War, students in the United States communicated regularly over the Internet with students in Israel, discussing such subjects as what it feels like to be under attack by Scud missiles.

Note From the Superintendent
Welcome to the Public Schools of Robeson County
Thank you for your interest
in the Public Schools of Robeson County
With approximately 24,000 students and 41 school sites, our system is the ninth largest in the State of North Carolina. It takes many educators and support personnel to serve our students. We have a very dedicated staff working for our students.
We are fortunate to have the support of the business and industrial community whose employees are active in mentoring and counseling our students. This helps them make better career decisions. To be able to collaborate with and have partnerships with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and Robeson Community College is invaluable. Additionally county government, non-profit groups, agencies, and parents have all contributed to the progress we have enjoyed. I would be remiss in not recognizing the importance of the 45,000 hours which nearly 12,000 volunteers contributed to our schools and students during the past year.
So many people, agencies and organizations working in conjunction with school personnel, students and parents deserve credit for the success our schools had during the past year. The State Board of Education listed 27 of our K-8 schools and 3 of our high schools as having made high growth according to the ABCs of Public Education while 5 of our K-8 schools and 3 of our high schools made expected growth. Scores continue to improve in all categories.
