North Carolina: The History of an American State
Introduction
Eighth grade students examine the role of North Carolina in the history of the American nation. Their study spans the national experience, beginning with the founding of the Carolina colony and reaching into contemporary times. As they examine North Carolina's development, students will find it most profitable to place the state within the context of the larger national history since our state, as one of the original thirteen, has shared the entirety of the national experience. In their study of North Carolina as an American state, students encounter the personalities, localities, and events which have given North Carolina a distinctive place in the nation. Additionally, they analyze those phenomena that have linked North Carolina so closely to the national experience the struggle for independence, the establishment and development of a national government and economy, the reform of the economic and social order, and the Civil War and foreign wars. At grade eight, students engage in their first study largely devoted to the discipline of history. Their instruction emphasizes the method and value of historical study as a way of learning about people. Because the history of North Carolina has been so influenced by its particular geography, students begin their study of state history by applying such geographic concepts as location and region to North Carolina. As they proceed through the study, they return to these concepts, examining their application even in contemporary life. Constitutional concepts and a focus on the changing roles of state and national governments are other essential and continuing themes.

America's Lost Colony: Can New Dig Solve Mystery? Willie Drye

March 2, 2004 Archaeologists know that the colonists spent some time at this spot on the north end of Roanoke Island, but they don't know much more about those unlucky settlers. Pulse of the Planet That might change soon, however. A group of archaeologists and historians met in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, earlier this month to launch the First Colony Foundation to raise money for new archaeological excavations in the Fort Raleigh park. They plan to start digging into one of the United States' most enduring historical puzzles early this summer. Even as the excavation looms, not everyone is eager for the answer to the Lost Colony mystery. North Carolina attorney Phil Evans, who helped start the First Colony Foundation, said, "I've always said I'd be just as happy if it was never solved. I like it being a mystery."

Shoring Up N. Carolina Islands: A Losing Battle? John Roach
for National Geographic News
November 10, 2003 When Hurricane Isabel roared onto the Outer Banks of North Carolina two months ago, stilted homes bowed to their knees, power lines snapped, sand piled over roadways, and residents in the hamlet of Hatteras sat isolated from the rest of the world. Storm waters locked up in the estuarine side of the islands desperate for escape punched a new inlet between Hatteras and Frisco, washing sand, vegetation, and U.S. Highway 12 out to sea. Read the full The formation of inlets such as Isabel Inlet on the Outer Banks of North Carolina (above) is a natural process in barrier island ecosystems. Scientists say filling them with sand will cause more problems when future storms come ashore. The State Data Center Program in North Carolina, 1978 to 1999 In North Carolina, the lead agency for the State Data Center program is the Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM) , which is located in the Office of the Governor. There are three state-level coordinating agencies: the State Library of North Carolina, the Institute for Research in Social Science, and the Center for Geographic Information and Analysis. The lead agency has a statutory mandate for statistical coordination in state government, and it has a long history of serving the public in information delivery and information locator services. Historically, it has produced the Statistical Register of State Government Statistics, the Profile of North Carolina Counties, the North Carolina State Statistical Abstract, the State Government Telephone Contact List , and a variety of special reports dealing with topics such as commuting patterns, census geographic concepts, and census occupational information. The lead agency also maintains an on-line menu-driven system of over 900 most-frequently-requested data items with historical information going back to 1970 through the present. This system is called Log into North Carolina. The State Demographer is located within the Office of State Budget and Management and produces annual estimates of the population of counties and municipalities and periodic long-term population projections for counties, all of which are readily available for dissemination through the lead agency.

    http://www.pbs.org/legendarylighthouses/html/natlgeo.html
GEOGRAPHY OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC The waters of the North Atlantic coast are a superhighway for ships. During the past two centuries, lighthouses which served as the signs, signals, and direction for this crowded superhighway of water, became very important to navigators along the East Coast of the United States. The marshy shorelines from Delaware to North Carolina create difficulties for navigators entering the coastal harbors, while the coast of New England is treacherous to mariners with its rocky offshore islands and gusts of ocean winds. These northern shores are, however, breathtakingly beautiful to visitors on shore. For naturalists, these coasts are the home to many species of wildlife including black back sea gulls and harbor seals. Further south toward the Chesapeake Bay, the waters of the North Atlantic become unpredictable with shallow waters and shifting shoals. These shores are dotted with forests and sandy beaches which create a pleasant environment with comfortable seclusion and protection from the ocean winds. This area of the Chesapeake Bay is the gateway to the harbors of the colonies and the large cities that exist along the East Coast today. Navigating this marine highway through the 200 mile-long waterways of the Eastern Coast was facilitated by the construction of lighthouses. Ships that navigate the North Atlantic Coast encounter many difficulties from rocky shores to marshy shores, and shallow waterways to deep coastal waters. However, viewed from the coast, these areas become calm, serene and beautiful. As our nation grew during the last two centuries, navigation along the Eastern Coast and through its labyrinth of waterways became essential. The lighthouses in this region from New England to North Carolina served as the guides with their sounds and signals from the shore to the navigators of the North Atlantic.

"Geography tells what is where, why and what of it." - Isaiah Bowman Students often ask "What can I do with geography?" While it is easy to get excited about maps, different cultures and environments, and even being a better citizen through geography, it is harder to see how geographic knowledge can lead to good jobs or meaningful careers. However, in recent years people have discovered that large numbers of societal problems have geographic dimensions and that education in geography provides essential skills for real-world problem solving. The range of jobs with a geographic aspect to them can be found in any newspaper, with articles about world hunger, environmental quality, hazardous-waste disposal, crime, urban housing, agricultural productivity, water management, transportation, and the value of land and real estate. As a result, geography has become a necessary ingredient in hundreds of different jobs.
