69. LAMP The Influence Of Geography On Western North Carolina
How did the geography of Western north carolina affect the lives of early Europeansettlers and how does it affect those in generations that follow?

LAMP: LIVING AMERICAN MEMORY PROJECT
LAMP stands for the Living American Memory Project. Its basic idea is to use the fuel of web links to light up the past so that we better understand our present and future. However, there is much more to this story . When you've read this story, follow the links in the model LAMP project below or explore the Other Resources links at the bottom of this page. Trials and Terrain:
Their Impact on the Development of Western North Carolina
THE INFLUENCE OF GEOGRAPHY ON
WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA CULTURE COMMUNICATIONS DYES CLOTHING FOOD ... TRANSPORTATION We approached this project not only as a students doing a University assignment but as "born-and-raised mountaineers" (for several of us) who have experienced many of the old mountain ways through family and friends. Others of our team have chosen to live in this area for many of the reasons that brought the first settlers to this land. We value our experiences as ones to be shared and appreciated, to be passed on to others as a means of understanding history and participating in it. The geography of the land was and is a big influence on the lives of Western North Carolinians, but the brave souls who first arrived here experienced great challenges posed by this beautiful but sometimes harsh "promised land." Throughout human history the choice of habitable land has greatly influenced the development of culture. The settlement of Western North Carolina was no exception. Nowhere in American colonization is the influence of the mountainous terrain more well defined than in the comparisons of the life styles and cultures of the settlers of North Carolina. How did the geography of Western North Carolina affect the lives of early European settlers and how does it affect those in generations that follow? Follow the links to the sites above to experience the stories and pictures of lives past and present.

12th Symposium on Education ONLINE WEATHER IN THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY AND EARTH SCIENCES AT NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY Harris E. Williams , North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC The Online Weather Studies course is presented in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). The course is structured to an audience of mainly undergraduate students. NCCU, a Historically Black College/University (HBCU), is one of the 16 constitute institutions of the University of North Carolina system. The Kipling Report ranked NCCU as the top HBCU in the nation. Recently, NCCU was ranked as one of sixteen North Carolina Universities in the top one hundred institutions in the nation by the Kipling Report. NCCU is an expanding university with a culturally diverse student body of over six thousand and is projected by the University of North Carolina to have over ten thousand students within the next ten years. The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences was started in 1960 by Dr. Theodore R. Speigner. It has been a major producer of students trained in Geography and the Earth Sciences. The undergraduate degree program (BS) is in Geography while the graduate degree program (MS) is in the Earth Sciences. Although the graduate degree program is only about 6-years old, it has produced qualified students with the M.S. degrees in the Earth Sciences. The Online Weather Studies at NCCU is a 2000- level course, taught to students from all disciplines. Students majoring in Geography and Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Biology Criminal Justice, Psychology and other disciplines elect to enroll in the class to gain practical knowledge centering on atmospheric dynamics. Students not only gain valuable information but also satisfy general curiosities regarding weather. Test results indicate that comprehension levels exceed the average. The class is taught hands-on in an interactive learning format. The Online Weather classes have been limited by the availability of computers and because it is a new course. These numbers are expected to increase with student awareness. Without exception, all the students have given the course very good reviews.

    http://www.secretary.state.nc.us/kidspg/geog.htm
From Manteo in the east to Murphy in the west, North Carolina is 560 miles wide, making it the widest state east of the Mississippi. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Tennessee on the west, Virginia to the north, and South Carolina and Georgia to the south, North Carolina is divided into three distinct geographic areas: the Coastal Plain in the east, the Piedmont in the center, and Mountains in the west. The Coastal Plain
The low, flat land of North Carolina's eastern region stretches from the sandy farmland of the Inner Coastal Plain to the state's Outer Banks, a string of barrier islands separated from the mainland by sounds or inlets. The Outer Banks has three capes Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, and Cape Fear. The Piedmont Piedmont is a French word meaning "foot of the mountain," and North Carolina's Piedmont region is sometimes referred to as "the foothills." The rolling hills of this region range in elevation from just 300 feet in the east to 1,500 feet near the mountains. The Piedmont is sometimes referred to as a plateau because it is high and mostly flat. The Mountains
Western North Carolina's majestic landscape features the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains, which help make up the Appalachian Mountains, possibly the oldest mountain range in the United States. The region is also home to Mount Mitchell. Rising 6,684 feet above sea level, Mount Mitchell is the tallest peak east of the Mississippi River. The Eastern Continental Divide runs along the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains, separating the rivers flowing east from those flowing west. Rivers that fall on the eastern side of the divide flow toward the Atlantic Ocean while those on the western side of the divide flow toward the Tennessee and Ohio rivers and into the Gulf of Mexico.
