Overview The Archaeology Major at UNCG, which is housed in the Special Programs in Liberal Studies, introduces students to the ancient civilizations and cultures of the Old and New Worlds and to the analytical tools that archaeologists use to facilitate their study. The major is designed to develop both anthropological and historical perspectives in archaeological research, to encompass the range of prehistoric to early historic cultures in the Old and New Worlds, and to introduce the theoretical concepts and methodological techniques appropriate to archaeological research. The Program's faculty are actively involved in field work in Greece, Mexico and North Carolina, and students are expected to participate in those or other field work projects in addition to meeting classroom requirements.

North Carolina's Geography
Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Tennessee on the west, Virginia to the north, and South Carolina and Georgia to the south, North Carolina is divided into three distinct geographic areas: the Mountains, in the west; the Heartland, often called the Piedmont, in the center; and the Coast, in the east. Each area has its own distinct features.
Mountains
The Appalachian mountain chain runs through the western part of the state. The highest peak, Mount Mitchell, in Yancey County, is 6,684 feet high, making it the tallest along the eastern coast of the U.S. The Great Smoky Mountains make this area one of the country's top scenic attractions. Visitors can enjoy grand vistas of magnificent beauty driving through the mountain ranges on the world-famous, 250-mile Blue Ridge Parkway.
Two-thirds of the mountains are covered with hardwood forests, and in autumn, they create a brilliant, colorful display. Skiing is a popular winter sport, with some areas getting 30 inches of snow a year. Summers are cool and refreshing with low humidity.
Piedmont
Encompassing the central part of the state, the Heartland is made up of gently rolling foothills.  Although the area enjoys four distinct seasons, temperatures are mild year round the average wintertime temperature is about 42 degrees, and in summer, it's 77 degrees. The area also enjoys sunshine for about 210 days a year. Located here are shopping meccas, top golf courses, historic sites and entertainment offerings.

The first European settlement in North Carolina is the famous Lost Colony of Roanoke Island that vanished sometime after 1587. North Carolina joined the Union in 1789 and is the 12th of the original 13 states. One of its major industries is tourism, as many Americans travel to the state to enjoy its beautiful beaches. North Carolina has a long, attractive coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, characterized by many islands, reefs and sand bars. The state stretches westward from the coast across both swampland and fertile tobacco fields. Historic sites, battlefields, old mansions and beautiful gardens attract sightseers and students of American history. North Carolina GOVERNMENT

North Carolina, U.S. Political Geography
Related Category: U.S. Political Geography The eastern end of North Carolina juts out from the East Coast of the United States into the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream, making the state prone to Atlantic hurricanes, which tend to strike the state every three to four years. Running along the entire coast of North Carolina, serving as a buffer against the Atlantic, is a long chain of barrier islands (the Outer Banks), with constantly shifting sand dunes, from which project three famous capes : Hatteras, Lookout, and Fear. Between the islands and the shoreline stretch lagoons : Albemarle Sound and Pamlico Sound are the largest : that receive the Chowan, Roanoke, Tar, Neuse, and Cape Fear rivers. Wilmington , the chief port, is at the head of the Cape Fear estuary. The mainland bordering the sounds is low, flat tidewater country, often swampy, even beyond the Dismal Swamp in the north. In the upper coastal plain the land rises gradually from the tidewater, reaching 500 ft (152 m) at the fall line. There begins the Piedmont, a rolling hill country with many swift streams such as the Broad River; the Catawba; and the Pee Dee, with its three large dams. The hydroelectric power these rivers generate has made this an important manufacturing area, and the Piedmont is home to most of the state's population and its largest cities. At the western edge of the Piedmont the land rises abruptly in the Blue Ridge, then dips down to several basins, and rises again in the Great Smoky Mts. Asheville is the leading urban center of this mountain region. Mt. Mitchell (6,684 ft/2,037 m) is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. The French Broad River, the Watauga, and other rivers rising west of the Blue Ridge flow into the Mississippi system, almost all via the Tennessee River.
