North Carolina Geography Table of Contents Overview Geographic Information Sources North Carolina's Three Regions Overview North Carolina is the 11th most populous state, according to the 2000 Census, with a resident population of 8,046,579. The population grew by 21.4% from the 1990 total of 6,628,637. According to Census records , only 8 other states grew faster during the last decade (Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Nevada, Texas, and Utah). North Carolina consists of 48,843 square miles of land and 3,826 square miles of inland water. Our total area of 52,669 square miles ranks North Carolina twenty-ninth in area among the states. The Old North State lies on the Eastern Seaboard with half of the population of the United States living within a 500-mile radius of the state. The state's temperate climate has four distinct seasons and is highly acclaimed for its year-round living comforts. Rainfall is adequate and dispersed over the entire year. Running along the entire coast of North Carolina, serving as a buffer against the Atlantic, is a long chain of barrier islands (the Outer Banks Wilmington , the chief port, is at the head of the Cape Fear estuary. The mainland bordering the sounds is low, flat tidewater country, often swampy, even beyond the Dismal Swamp in the north. In the upper coastal plain the land rises gradually from the tidewater, reaching 500 ft (152 m) at the fall line. There begins the Piedmont, a rolling hill country with many swift streams such as the Broad River; the Catawba; and the Pee Dee, with its three large dams. The hydroelectric power these rivers generate has made this an important manufacturing area, and the Piedmont is home to most of the state's population and its largest cities. At the western edge of the Piedmont the land rises abruptly in the Blue Ridge, then dips down to several basins, and rises again in the Great Smoky Mts. The first major railroad for the state connected Raleigh with Wilmington in 1840. What was probably the first drawbridge built in the U.S. was built over the Cape Fear River. In the 1920's a road building effort to connect all county seats with hard-surfaced roads was instituted. This ultimately caused the state to be known as the "Good Roads State." 1,505 traffic deaths occurs in 1999, 536 deaths were alcohol related. Over 78,000 miles of highways in 1999, one of the largest state-maintained systems. The oldest bridge in North Carolina, still in use is the Pigeon River Bridge. Built in 1891 on S.R. 1112 near Waynesville in Haywood County. The NCDOT has the largest ferry system on the east coast. In 1996 NCDOT removed about 400,000 truckloads of debris left by Hurricane Fran.
