It is in the north central section of the State and is bounded by Forsyth, Davie, Iredell, Wilkes and Surry counties. The first court was ordered to be held at Dowellton, at which time the justices were to adjourn to any place they wished until a courthouse could be erected. Commissioners were named to select a site for the courthouse as near of the center of the county as possible. Also, they were to acquire land and lay off a town by the name of Wilson. In 1852 an act was passed changing Wilson to Yadkinville. Yadkinville is the county seat. New River Notes Regional Files

    NORTH CAROLINA COLLECTION
The main locations of the Gaston County Public Library and the Lincoln County Public Library both house a North Carolina Collection. These are non-circulating reference collections of historical and cultural materials that focus primarily on Gaston and Lincoln Counties but include North Carolina as a whole. Lesser emphasis is given to bordering states such as South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee. Resources The North Carolina Collections offers the following resources:
    • Books and PeriodicalsBoth libraries collect material focusing on the history and genealogy of their area and also contain general genealogical resources. Gaston County history can be found at 975.677, and Lincoln County history at 975.678. The collection at Gastonia includes city directories for Gastonia back to 1910 and county cross references for Gaston County back to 1973. In addition, the Gaston County location houses an eight volume James Worthy Scrapbook created by Scott Lewis.
    • The online is an index to biographical material that is "buried" within books in our collections. More entries are being added to these pages as staff members have time.

A Selective Guide for Family Research
    Getting Started
While it is true that what works for one individual may not prove successful for another, it is hoped that this brief guide will provide you some important essentials in creating your own research strategy. If you are starting genealogical research for the first time and have decided to begin your search in North Carolina, the following volumes are highly recommended:
    • North Carolina Research: Genealogy and Local History (2nd ed.) NoCar Ref CS 16 N67 1996

    • This work explains in detail the fundamentals of genealogical research especially as they relate to North Carolina. In addition to methodology, considerable attention is given to understanding aspects of various sorts of county, state, federal and private records.
    • The Short, Short Course in the Use of North Carolina’s Early County-Level Records in Genealogical Research NoCar Ref F 253 H633 1988 An Intermediate Short, Short Course in the Use of Some North Carolina Records NoCar Ref F 253 H629 1990

    • Written by noted Genealogist, Margaret M. Hofmann, these two very concise volumes serve as handy reference guides in deciphering the many peculiarities of older county and state level records found in North Carolina.

Hensley Genealogy: What's New? My Lineage Researcher List Documented Families ... Links martygrant.com: Home Christian Genealogy Surname List ... Surnames My Hensley ancestry begins with Larkin Hensley , born ca 1761 in Virginia. He was in Washington Co, VA by 1782 and died there ca 1805/06. The section he lived in soon became Scott Co, VA. His widow and children all moved to Sullivan Co, TN very briefly, then went to Knox Co, TN by 1808. From there, the children spread out, several going to Illinois, and my line to Monroe Co, TN. Samuel Hensley , born 1801, a son of Larkin, married Nancy Johnson in Knox Co, TN in 1823, and moved to Monroe Co, TN. He died there in 1852. Their daughter Rachel B. Hensley married Lafayette George in 1851 and they moved to Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC right after marriage. Lafayette and Rachel were my 3rd Great Grandparents. There were an incredibly large number of Hensleys in the southern and mid-western United States by the mid 1800's. That makes it seem unlikely that they were all related, but it is possible that they were all descendants of some common ancestor, either here or in Europe (England seems the likely origin for the Hensleys). I believe the first documented Hensleys in America were in Virginia in the mid to late 1600's.

I am interested in all the Dugger's in the United States prior to 1860, with a major emphasis on those in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee and other southern states. Click on the Families link to see pages for the various known families. My Dugger line begins with Daniel Dugger (Duggard) born ca 1690's in Virginia. He married Mary Scarborough before 1717 in Surry Co, VA. They are thought to be the parents of William Dugger born ca 1720. William Dugger eventually moved to western North Carolina where he died ca 1774 in what is now Wilkes County. He is thought to be the father of Mary Dugger born 1750/60, who married 1st Drury Goodwin, and second, Jacob Smith. They lived in Carter Co, TN where she died in the 1830's. These are my ancestors (via Smith).
