About The North Carolina GenWeb Project In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the database would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual was found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. The NC Gen Web Project is an extension of the KY Gen Web Project. My name is Thomas P. Winslow and I'm the volunteer responsible for Iredell County. Please contact me if you have data that you would like to be added, a link you think should be included, and any other suggestions or comments or if you would like to volunteer to do lookups. Please Read - As NCGenWeb coordinator for Iredell County, I am simply the person who puts the page together and maintains it. I am by no means an expert on genealogy, any individual Iredell County families, or Iredell County itself. I hope you will understand that I am unable to answer individual questions about Iredell County history or Iredell County families (other than my own families that I am linked with on the pages). My purpose is to provide a place where you can find other researchers and other sources of information. As I find more information sources, they will be posted. If you have sources to suggest, I hope you will contact me. I am always on the lookout for additional information. If you have questions, please send them in the form of queries to be posted.

I am interested in all the Grant's in the southern United States prior to 1860 with a major emphasis on those in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Click on the Documented Families link to see pages for the various known families. My Grant line begins with William Grant , born ca 1720, presumably in VA. He and his family moved to old Tryon Co, NC (now Rutherford Co, NC) in the 1770's. His wife was Mary, maiden name unknown, though Morris, Bradley or Dalton are possibilities. William and Mary's son Andrew Grant was born ca 1755/65 in VA and died ca 1825 in Rutherford Co, NC. His wife was Martha Mackey, who died 1850 in Macon Co, NC. Andrew and Martha's son Thomas B. A whole bunch of good old southern surnames, mostly from western
    North Carolina and southern Georgia

Welcome to my Genealogy Site! Although I have lived in Michigan since I was four years old, all my roots 'n relatives are in the south. My heart belongs to western North Carolina, with the majestic mountains and beautiful waterfalls and we hope to retire there in the near future. One thing that I've discovered in my research is that almost everybody with roots in Jackson, Transylvania and surrounding counties are related, usually in several ways. So if you have ancestors from this area the chances are excellent that we are cyber-cousins, e-mail me and we'll find out. All information at my site may be used freely for private, non-commercial use. Please be aware that I have over 33,000 names in my database at this time and, except for my own direct lines, this information has not been personally verified. The information on this site represents a compilation of material from many written sources, internet databases and data generously shared with me by other researchers. I have recently seen some other genealogy sites on the Internet listing this site as a source for their information and this disturbs me. The information found here is meant to be a starting point for personal research and should not be used as a source for documentation purposes. If you find any information that you believe is in error (and I'm sure you will) please politely let me know and I will be happy to correct it. I gladly accept unsolicited donations if you agree that the information can be posted on this site. So pull up a rocker and sit a spell on the porch. We'll look out at the beautiful Smoky Mountains, sip some sweet tea and you can meet the family.

    A Macon County Landmark
    Gillespie Chapel
The evocative steeple of historic Gillespie Chapel watches over the valley of Jones Creek as it has for more than a century. In its day, the building served as church and schoolhouse for this rural Macon County community. The chapel is no longer on the Methodist Circuit. But, as the home of the Upper Cartoogechaye Community Club, it continues to hold a central place in the life of the neighborhood. Teresita Press took its name from the Teresita Post Office, which once served the community from the Gillespie Chapel parsonage. The rural landscape of Macon County is rich in history, legend and folklore. Exploring the heritage of this Southern Appalachian region is the mission of Teresita Press.

Opened in 1975, the North Carolina Room houses many rare and out-of-print resources for the study and preservation of local and state history. Because of the special nature of these materials, this is a non-circulating reference collection (which means you have to use our collection in the building). Our staff of professional librarians is ready to assist you in finding answers to your questions about Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, and North Carolina. Everyone is welcome to use the collection. Please stop by the reference desk and introduce yourself.
    Genealogy - Climbing Family Trees
The North Carolina collection contains approximately 3000 volumes of abstracted records and family histories. While most of these books relate directly to North Carolina, many concern adjoining states or areas from which there was considerable migration into North Carolina. There is also a small collection of books relating to heraldry and coats-of-arms.
