Please know that this work is in no wise to be considered complete. The natural entries and exits of human players on the stage of life will continue to assure that. Additional information can always be contributed to the files of those whose names and stations appear here. It is my hope that this work will simply become a platform from which subsequent more comprehensive and exhaustive works might be launched.
Several portions of this work may fly into the face of some long-standing family legends and oral tradition, and may even arouse the sensitivities of some persons. Nevertheless, the record herein recorded is set forth as it was found. While being true to the role of the historian here, I perceive and appreciate the obligation to tell the truth, the whole truth, etc. As a consequence of this historian’s dilemma, I have attempted to draw conclusions only where inconclusiveness exists, and then only where circumstances would logically lead to those conclusions. I have also attempted to editorialize as sparingly as possible, and to leave the factual door ajar for whosoever will present new facts and information.

by Paul Heinegg
Paul Heinegg's Free African Americans of North Carolina and Virginia is a collection of genealogies about African American families living in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Garnering the American Society of Genealogists' Donald Lines Jacobus Award in 1994, it is a resource well-worth investigating for any individual tracing families from these locations and time periods. Here, you can get a taste of Paul Heinegg's research and writing through the Introduction he wrote for this book. Even if you are not researching families from these locations and time periods, you will find that the Introduction provides you with an interesting look at African-American life during this time period. Specifically, he shows how the social status of many landowning African-American families changed so much over the years that "by the 20th century they had no idea their ancestors had been free." It is lengthy, so you may prefer to print it rather than reading it online. Footnotes for the Introduction are included at the bottom of this page. However, to get information about citations shown in square brackets ( [ ] ), please refer to the complete book.

I'm researching the Bailey family of western North Carolina, primarily in Rutherford and Cleveland counties. The oldest ancestor I know about is Benjamin Bailey (born in 1821), who married Lucy Braddy. His ancestors came from England.
Their son, Joe Bailey (1844-1938) married Sara Womack. Their son, Benjamin Willis Bailey, is my grandfather. Joe was also married to Nancy LeQuire.
I am also seeking information on the Fraser family of Hall County, Georgia, and Cleveland County, North Carolina.
Any information or suggestions will be appreciated. I will gladly share what I have with anyone.
