http://www.sedl.org/rel/partners.html
SEDL is joining the Charles A. Dana Center of The University of Texas at Austin and American Indian Research and Development (AIRD), Inc., in Norman, Oklahoma, to work intensively with 60 school and district sites across the South and Southwest. SEDL staff and partners are helping schools and districts assess needs, as well as create and share the know-how to focus improvement efforts on reading and mathematics instructional programs. While SEDL brings significant expertise in reading, school change, and school-level work to the partnership, the Dana Center contributes experience in mathematics, policy, and district-level work. AIRD staff provides knowledge in working with Native American populations. Active involvement of the five chief state school officers as well as other state education agency staff in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas is essential to REL work. They are responsible for establishing the criteria and procedures for determining the performance status of schools. They also control many of the resources available in each state to support the transformation of low-performing schools into high-performing learning communities. SEDL knows that improvements at the school level will not be sustained without support from the district level. In addition, districts that learn to work successfully with one or two low-performing schools will be able to transfer the knowledge and skills to other low-performing schools.

Counseling Service
A major role of the counseling staff at Nash Community College is to assist students in making the transition to college. Counseling services are available to all current and prospective students, and students are encouraged to visit a Counselor’s office any time a question or problem arises which could impact the students progression in their program of study. Students are seen on an individual, first-come, first-served basis. However, appointments are welcome. Counselors provide academic counseling, placement testing, student orientation, and referral services. Students have the opportunity to discuss their interests, aptitudes, and vocational goals with a counselor in an attempt to facilitate the student’s selection of their educational program of study. Nash Community College counselors are dedicated to meeting the needs presented by the students, and therefore various workshops may be designed and conducted by the counseling staff throughout the academic year.

Serving a coastal North Carolina community, the Carteret County Public School System is an example of a school system that launched an educational technology rocket ship. In 1995, the community overwhelmingly supported a 29 million dollar bond referendum that included 6.25 million dollars for technology. This resulted in the addition of 2-3 computers per K-8 classroom, 1-2 computers per 9-12 classroom, and computer labs and local area networks in all schools. Purchase of this amount of hardware necessitated a massive staff development agenda, which in turn pushed the agenda for human infrastructure in technology. Today, the Carteret County Public School System is recognized as being on the forefront of system-wide deployment and integration of educational technology to enhance teaching and learning in a K-12 setting.

Laws of North Carolina, known as statutes, are made by the General Assembly. The North Carolina General Assembly (NCGA) is made of two bodies or houses; the Senate, which has 50 members; and the House of Representatives, which consists of 120 members. Each legislator represents either a Senatorial District or a House District.
The General Assembly meets in regular session beginning in January of each odd-numbered year, and adjourns to reconvene the following even-numbered year for a shorter session.
The Senate and the House of Representatives meet in their respective chambers on Monday evenings; in the middle of the day (usually at 1:30) on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; and on Friday mornings. The members return to their homes to take care of their affairs and be available to their constituents during the weekend. During the week, committee meetings are held in the morning and late afternoon. A great deal of the legislative work is done in the committee meetings.
