Guests:
Naomi Domingez, Dale Fleeger, Kathleen Morgan, Beth Perry, Chris Peterson, Vickie Phillips, Steve Seals, Dawn Vogler, and Lea Worcester. Chair Mary Christmas called the meeting to order at 4:05pm. Committee members and visitors introduced themselves. The minutes of the 2001 Annual Assembly Meeting were reviewed and approved.
Old Business:
Dale Fleeger reviewed the TLA 2002 Pre-Conference Program, "Teaching on the Web" and Conference Program, "Videostreaming Content." Both events were held in the auditorium and instruction lab at the Dallas Public Library; the pre-conference was well attended while the conference program was not as well attended as hoped. He believed this was due to the fact the conference program followed the opening general session with Robert Caro. Those attending both sessions appreciated the content and came away with practical ideas to use. Financial Statement - The committee reviewed the current financial statement. Dale reported the 2002 Pre-Conference sponsored with the Continuing Education Providers Interest Group generated $1900 of income which is in their account since committee funds do not roll over from year to year.

'Raw Data' Links Students to Valuable Sources
Education World explores Raw Data, a Web page teachers and students can use to find fascinating and useful educational facts. Discover how one North Carolina teacher used the Web page to teach middle school and high school students about the science of waves while helping them learn such computer skills as keyboarding, database utilization, and spreadsheet creation. Included: Examples of raw data resources plus suggestions for using raw data across the curriculum. The students in John Milton Mills Blake Jr.'s Earth science classes at North Whiteville Academy are tired of the kind of static, generalized information they get from textbooks. According to Blake, to keep his students interested lessons must be "relevant and real-world." "My students must have real-world data," the North Carolina teacher tells Education World. "The information in a textbook appears to them to be busy work."

Some Schools Opt to Go Wireless
Although people often use the terms cellular and wireless interchangeably when they talk about phones, the two are different. A wireless phone system that has no monthly charges and works only on school grounds is becoming popular with certain school systems. Education World chats with school leaders in districts that have adopted wireless phone technology. Included: How do wireless systems work? Administrators contemplating back-up communications systems for their schools now have an option other than cellular phones and walkie-talkies. Several companies are marketing wireless phone systems to school districts. Wireless systems enable every staff member to carry a phone, and no monthly air-time charges are incurred.
