Comparison of Traditional and Charter Schools
Study finds charter schools providing solid early education
ARIZONA – This study examines 158,000 test scores of more than 60,000 Arizona students attending 873 charter and traditional public schools statewide over a three-year period. Charter school students in elementary grades exhibited faster achievement growth than traditional public school students. Achievement growth in the middle grades was similar for both kinds of students, while high school achievement growth was higher for traditional public school students. One reason for this is that elementary charters are more likely to focus on academics, while middle and high school charters generally serve more at risk students. Read more here
NC School Enrollment to Drop
Federal projections could have significant implications for state, local budgets
RALEIGH — The National Center For Education Statistics predicts that by 2013 North Carolina will have 11,000 to 12,000 fewer K-12 students in its schools, compared to its 2001 enrollment. According to the NC Statistical Profile 2001, 1.29 million K-12 students, including charter students, enrolled in the public schools that year. If the NCES projections are correct, by 2013 enrollment will drop to about 1.28 million statewide. The NCES study examines trends across all states, and the expected gainers outnumber the losers. In all, 30 states will pick up K-12 enrollment, NCES says in its Projections of Education Statistics to 2013.

Personal Flotation Devices: All recreational vessels must have one Type I, II or III PFD of a suitable size for each person aboard and each skier being towed. In addition, recreational vessels 16 feet and over must also have one throwable Type IV PFD. Required PFDs must be readily accessible. Speed Limits and Reckless Operation: Although local conditions may warrant the imposition of definite limitations on speed of vessels, a general speed limit is that which is implied in safe vessel operation under existing circumstances. Speed which is excessive under the circumstances, and which endangers persons or property, is one form of reckless operation which is prohibited by North Carolina boating law. Watercraft entering, leaving or passing within 50 yards of a state-owned or controlled boating and fishing access area must do so at "no-wake" speed.

Cooperative Education (co-op) is a structured academic program designed to enhance the quality and breadth of learning by providing qualified undergraduate and graduate students the option of integrating academic study with related, work based learning. Students enroll in alternating semesters of full-time study and full-time, paid employment. The awarding of a Cooperative Education Program Certificate requires a minimum of twelve months of full-time work and fulfillment of additional program requirements including degree completion. Because the program meets the criteria established by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), engineering graduates may use the co-op work experience toward professional engineering license requirements. NC State's Co-op Program has received accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Cooperative Education.

The North Carolina Motorcyclists' Education Foundation has been awarded full nonprofit status by the IRS and the NC State Dept. of Revenue. Thus all gifts are considered Tax-deductible It has been more than 10 years since the North Carolina legislature created the North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program (NCMSEP). This program soared and matured over the years into a highly respected state program of impeccable quality. Currently, more that 3,500 people learn to ride each year at one of 17 sites throughout North Carolina. Without the dedicated commitment of over 100 MSF-certified instructors and the North Carolina Community College System, this would not be possible. NCMSEP's growth and success is now straining the financial budget currently available from the state. A group of dedicated motorcyclists have come together to form the North Carolina Motorcyclist Educational Foundation, Incorporated (NCMEFI) to provide additional support to the state program. All state agencies operate under very strict and sometimes stringent rules and regulations NCMSEP is no exception. By forming this non-profit corporation, the foundation is able to provide a great deal of flexibility for the solicitation and distribution of obtained resources for the NCMSEP. Many interactions with the public and business community which would be difficult, if not impossible, for NCMSEP to undertake will be a course of business for the foundation. All of the officers and board members have volunteered and agreed to serve without compensation. Corporate office space was donated by Heintzelman Law Offices. This will allow operating costs to be kept to a minimum to meet our goal that 85% of all funds raised will go to support the NCMSEP. The other 15% covers the costs of printing, mailing, etc.

NC State Superintendents 1852-Present The Colonial Period Throughout the colonial period, the provincial government accepted no responsibility for education. The meager educational opportunities which did exist resulted primarily from the efforts of religious leaders of the Anglican, Presbyterian, Quaker, and Moravian churches and from private tutors employed by a single family or several families in a cooperative undertaking. Literate parents sometimes taught their own children and, perhaps, the children of neighbors. A few affluent parents, mostly plantation owners and merchants, sent their children to England for further education beyond that provided by tutors. In a very few instances, in early population centers like Edenton and New Bern, schools with several teachers were established. A state highway historical marker in Elizabeth City reads "First School. Charles Griffin Taught In This County, the First Known School in North Carolina, 1705-1708." These early schools in Pasquotank, Chowan, and Craven were the exceptions rather than the rule.

The Honor Code Persons enrolled in The Graduate School are members of the student body of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and are held responsible for conducting themselves in conformity with the moral and legal restraints found in any law-abiding community. They are, moreover, subject to the regulations of the Honor Code. The Honor Code is the heart of integrity at Carolina. In brief, the Honor Code states that all students shall “refrain from lying, cheating, or stealing,” but the Honor Code imparts much more. It is the guiding force behind the responsible exercise of freedom, the foundation of student self-governance at UNC. By abiding by the Honor Code, students can be assured that their individual rights and academic work will be respected. Mutual Responsibilities of the Faculty and Students Academic work is a joint enterprise involving faculty and students. Both have a fundamental investment in the enterprise and both must share responsibility for ensuring its integrity. In relation to the Honor Code, therefore, specific responsibilities of the faculty which parallel the responsibilities of the students have been formally adopted by the Faculty Council.

http://www.childcareresourcesinc.org/earlycare/ratios.html
Staff to Child Ratios One of the most important quality indicators for child care centers is the number of staff compared to the number of children its staff to child ratio . A low staff to child ratio is one of the most critical components of a quality program. North Carolina considers the staff to child ratio, in addition to other environmental factors, when assigning points in the program standards component of a program's star rated license. The following chart shows the minimum ratio requirements for different age groups. Also included are the staff to child ratios for those centers that achieve national accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Family child care homes do not have staff to child ratios because, by definition, they are staffed by one person. Refer to the definition of a family child care home for the number of children permitted per program. Small centers in a residence may be licensed for six to twelve children. When a small center in residence has children of different ages, staff-child ratios and appropriate group size must be met for the youngest child in the group. These centers may also care for up to three school-age children in addition to the children for which they are licensed (depending on the ages of these children).
