Residency Programs General Surgery General Surgery Faculty Curriculum Resident Destinations The Residency in General Surgery at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center is a standard five-year program. NHRMC is a county-owned 628-bed facility that serves a seven-county area in southeastern North Carolina. It serves both as a community hospital for the Wilmington, N.C. metropolitan area, and as a tertiary referral center for the surrounding counties. The Wilmington metropolitan area has a population of 230,000, large enough to support an active community surgical residency. The total population of the seven-county service area is more than 600,000 - roughly the size of the cities of Memphis, Milwaukee and Boston, and larger than Seattle, Denver and Charlotte. The population base assures the subspecialty clinic volumes to support active programs in all surgical areas. NHRMC has characteristics that traditionally have been associated with both public and private hospitals. Its charter commits the hospital to the care of the indigent. As the most advanced specialty hospital in the region, it supports many private group practices in all fields of surgery and medicine. NHRMC surgeons affiliated with the residency have among the most active programs in endovascular surgery and advanced minimally invasive surgery in the state. There are more than 55,000 emergency department visits each year. The surgical caseload exceeds 20,000. As a North Carolina-designated level II Trauma Center, the hospital has one of the largest trauma admission volumes in the state, exceeding 1,500 admissions annually.

North Carolina Character Education Partnership: General Information
In 1996, The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction received a three year grant from the United States Office of Education to fund a partnership in character education. North Carolina joins 28 other states in receiving grants for this purpose from The Fund for the Improvement of Education. North Carolina was funded on the second attempt in the second year of the competition. States receiving funding are: The North Carolina Character Education Partnership (NCCEP) has developed a model to promote the development of character and citizenship. NCCEP is comprised of three county school systems (Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Cumberland, and Wake) working collaboratively with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and The Center for the Prevention of School Violence. The Partnership has developed and piloted a model character education program that can be replicated and adapted throughout the state and across the country. A Steering Committee, comprised of the project coordinator and one representative from each of the partners, coordinates the project to ensure that the activities are carried out as planned. The Steering Committee is staffed by a part-time Partnership Coordinator and meets quarterly to review progress, screen submissions to the Character Education Clearinghouse, exchange information, plan dissemination, and make the necessary modifications to the model. An outside evaluator has been employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the programs implemented by the Partnership.
