Overview

Established in 1891, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is one of the three original institutions of The University of North Carolina System. It is a public, coeducational, doctoral granting institution composed of approximately 12,500 students, 2,700 of whom are graduate students. While the majority of students are from North Carolina, students also come from forty different states and forty-three foreign countries; minority enrollment is approximately 17 percent. The UNCG faculty is composed of more than 700 members dedicated to excellence in teaching and research; ninety-three percent hold doctoral degrees. The School of Education at UNCG was recently ranked among the top 50 schools of education in the nation by US News and World Report and is one of just two Carnegie-designated, doctoral granting institutions to achieve this ranking. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is an Equal Opportunity educator and employer. The Community
The University is located in a region of north central North Carolina known as the Triad. The region's three principal cities are Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point, and together with the surrounding counties, the three cities comprise a metropolitan statistical area of almost 1.2 million people. The area is one of mild climate, natural beauty, and diverse industry. Greensboro is North Carolina's third largest city, with a population of approximately 200,000. The city offers a variety of cultural activities including museums, opera, ballet, the symphony, and the University's own Weatherspoon Gallery which boasts an impressive collection of modern art. The Blue Ridge mountains to the west and Atlantic beaches to the east are within a few hours drive. The campus itself is composed of 170 acres and nearly eighty buildings with brick walkways and flowering trees spread throughout.

(Associated Press 07/12/99) [Associated Press Headline: "Highway labor-civil rights dispute ties up St. Louis Interstate"] "Interstate 70 is the region's busiest east-west corridor. Much road construction work is under way around St. Louis this summer, including replacement of bridges and overpasses on I-70. The protesters have demanded that minorities make up 35 percent of workers and 25 percent of contractors in construction projects. "About 350 protesters, led by the Rev. Al Sharpton, the New York civil rights activist, want the state to hire more minority contractors for highway construction projects. Protest organizers said talks with Gov. Mel Carnahan's staff over the past week have gone nowhere [in terms of guaranteeing racial set-asides for selected skin colors]. (AP, via FoxNews 07/12/99) Last known link:

NORTH CAROLINA ECONOMY IS CENTRAL ISSUE
New survey of state business leaders fosters fiscal-policy debate
The 2004 elections in North Carolina promise to be exciting, competitive, and critical to the future of the state. The lingering weakness of the economy will likely be the central issue, because North Carolina has posted the worst performance on job creation and income growth among the Southern states since 2001. Layoffs in manufacturing and other industries, controversial trade policies, tax increases, crumbling infrastructure, and other matters will attract debate — and have already attracted the close attention of the John Locke Foundation, North Carolina’s leading source of analysis and commentary on public policy. During April and May, JLF researchers will travel to cities across the state to discuss the findings of a new survey of business leaders and present JLF research on fiscal and economic issues.
Executives Seek Business-Climate Change
RALEIGH — North Carolina business executives see high taxes, burdensome regulations, and inadequate labor skills as the top factors hampering the state’s economic competitiveness, according to a new survey by the John Locke Foundation. Respondents were overwhelmingly opposed to raising taxes to deal with budget deficits, and expressed skepticism about the cost-effectiveness of most government programs, said Chad Adams, director of JLF’s Center for Local Innovation and a coauthor of “Climate Change 2004: Economic Readings and Forecasts from North Carolina Business Leaders.”
