No longer are people of Spanish and Indian ancestry concentrating exclusively near state military bases in the coastal plain and in rural regions as migrant agricultural workers. The study, titled "North Carolina Communities in Transition," showed most Hispanics are of Mexican descent, and about 60 percent already are U.S. citizens. Most Puerto Ricans, who are all U.S. citizens and the state's second largest Hispanic group, live in Onslow and Cumberland counties near the military bases.

First GIS Day 2003 Proclamation Congratulations to Jo Anne Manley, GIS Coordinator for the City of Monroe, North Carolina, who recently obtained the first GIS Day 2003 proclamation. The GIS Day Committee will be sending Jo Anne a special GIS Day 5th Anniversary commemorative t-shirt to thank her for her efforts. The city has hosted GIS Day events in the past, but this is the first year that they have asked the Mayor to sign an official proclamation making November 19, 2003, "GIS Day" in the City of Monroe, North Carolina.
