Archaeology Graduate Program Faculty Undergraduate Program Archaeology is one of three programs (with Physical Anthropology and Sociocultural Anthropology) in the Department of Anthropology at Washington University. The archaeology program offers graduate and undergraduate training in a broad array of topical and geographic areas of study. We emphasize the combination of strong theoretical grounding in anthropology and archaeology with topical subspecialization to produce well trained, versatile, and marketable Ph.D. students. We also provide the opportunity for geographical concentration in Old and New World prehistory with on-going research taking place in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Italy, Scotland, and numerous locations in the United States. Our program is highly interdisciplinary: faculty and students work with scholars in different fields at Washington University and around the globe to produce a better understanding of human culture and history. Graduate Study in Archaeology : Within the archaeology program there are areas of special concentration reflecting faculty interest and special research resources. We have highly regarded programs in paleoethnobotany , zooarchaeology, and geoarchaeology . Current faculty research is focused on the Mississippi Valley, the Southwest (including northern Mexico)

Online Journal Survey
With the September 2003 mailing of Arctic, we printed an online journal survey on the back of the mailer to receive feedback from members on the value of producing an online version of Arctic. We also mounted the survey on our website, so that people could respond electronically. We received 267 responses to the survey. The survey results are shown in the table below, broken down into three categories: all respondents (n = 267), members only (n = 171; 64% of respondents), and non-members (n = 96; 36% of respondents).
About half of our members were interested in receiving an online version along with the print version, but less than one-fourth of members wanted only an online version. Almost three-quarters of member respondents would continue with a print version, even if the online version were freely available on the AINA website. Over two-thirds would drop their AINA membership if we no longer provided a print journal.

Destinations: Archeology of North Cascades
Though it will be a long time before the complete story of human use of the North Cascades can be told, the following sections summarize what has been learned from recent archeological studies in this most scenic and rugged of Washington''s mountainous landscapes. Most of the archeological sites in the park consist of the below-ground remains of camps, villages, and resource use areas where Indian people processed and cooked food, collected specific kinds of rocks and minerals for tools, and hunted, fished, and collected plants. Some sites have above-ground remains, and appear as rockshelters, rock art, bark-stripped trees, rock features, and pits dug into the ground. A much smaller number of sites reflect historic-period, non-Indian settlement and exploration, especially mining.

The Spanish explorers and missionaries, who were the first Europeans to enter Texas, often adopted Texas Indian names for rivers and other natural features. The Spaniards translated the place names into Spanish, and many of the Indian origins for place-names have been lost. See our selection of Texas place-names derived from Indian languages as well as names that are associated with Indians or their activities.
