The Realm of Lastaria A Game World Based on Celtic and Norse Mythology
Welcome to the Realm of Lastaria Lastaria is a Fantasy Game World that I created originally as a Ravonloft Realm and ran for one of my players (Leon Kirk). It soon however evolved and I decided to take it out of Ravenloft and develop as an Independent world.
I have always had an interest in Celtic and Norse Mythology and therefore decided to use this as a basis for my world taking the Gods and many of the ideas from these mythologies but adding my own twists plus many of my own ideas.
I have been developing these ideas for many years and have even ran Lastaria as a PBM (Play By Mail)
I also run it as a game amongst friends using the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons System although I hope soon to have developed my own system.
I hope you enjoy my world, If you have any questions or ideas feel free to EMail me using the link below.
The Lastaria Web sight will be constantly updated so please come back as there will very likely be something new to look at. THE REALM OF LASTARIA WEBSITE WAS LAST UPDATED ON THE 27th MAY 2001 Witch Class Added.

Hræthgarm Hræthgarm is an epic poem set in the world envisioned by the Scandinavian peoples of the latter half of the first millenium A.D. It incorporates elements of Norse mythology. If you are unfamiliar with the mythology of the old Norse people, here is a link to a sight with a fairly comprehensive index: Encyclopedia Mythica The entries don't go into much depth, but it's a good start. Also, check out what the author has to say about his work - see Author's Notes If you've already read Hræthgarm and would like to comment on it, you can do so in my guestbook: Sign Guestbook Anyway, if you want to get to the poem itself, click on any of the links below:

Who were the Norse and Germanic people? Was there any historical connection to Norse myths? Sources for Norse myths
Who were the Norse and Germanic people? The name Norse referred to people and language of the ancient Scandinavians (Norwegians, Swedish, Danish, and Icelandic). Technically, the word Norse means Norwegian, but it loosely included the Icelanders, Swedes, and the Danes. Scandinavian consisted of part of the Germanic people and language. Some scholars and historians believed that all Germanic tribes originated from Scandinavian Peninsula (Sweden and Norway) and Jutland (Denmark). The Romans first encountered Germans in the late 2nd century BC. The Teutones and Cimbri were Germanic tribes from Jutland (Denmark), migrating southward. The mighty Roman armies were badly mauled by the Germans at Noreia , north of the Alps, in 113 BC; and later at Arausio (Orange), southern Gaul (France), in 105 BC. The Romans under its general Gaius Marius finally defeated the Teutones and Ambrones, at at Aquae Sextiae (modern Aix-en-Provence) in 102 and then the Cimbri at Vercellae in 101 BC.

Norse Mythology
In the beginning there was cold and heat
The way to the North - Norway - has always been regarded as a route that is hard to find, difficult to tread and fraught with unspeakable dangers. To the writers of ancient Greece and Rome Norway was a mythical world - Ultima Thule, peopled by wild barbarians and full of strange and fantastic creatures. In the 4th century BC, the Greek Pytheas described a place where the laws of nature seemed to be suspended, where earth and water and air came together and everything seemed to float about freely. The renowned historian Herodot complained that it was actually quite impossible to say anything at all about the northern regions, because one simply couldn't see a foot in front of one. This was because of all the white feathers that constantly blow in people's faces - the air is thick with such feathers, he wrote, and the ground completely covered by them! We should probably interpret this observation as the somewhat unsuccessful attempt of a southerner to describe a snowstorm. However, it's true enough; Norway has always had more than its share of snow and ice. A major portion of our country lies north of the Arctic Circle. And even though the glaciers have long since receded from these parts, the Ice Age lasted longer in Norway than in most other places. Paganism too lasted longer here in the north. When the rest of Europe had been christianized for almost a thousand years, Norwegians were still worshipping their old pagan gods.

Most information about Scandinavian mythology is preserved in the Old Norse literature (Icelandic, Swedish, and Norwegian Literature), in the Eddas and later sagas; other material appears in commentaries by the Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus and the German writer Adam of Bremen (flourished about 1075). Fragments of legends are sometimes preserved in old inscriptions and in later folklore. Gods and Heroes Besides Odin, the major deities of Scandinavian mythology were his wife, Frigg, goddess of the home; Thor, god of thunder, who protected humans and the other gods from the giants and who was especially popular among the Scandinavian peasantry; Frey, a god of prosperity; and Freya, sister of Frey, a fertility goddess. Other, lesser gods were Balder, Hermod, Tyr, Bragi, and Forseti; Idun, Nanna, and Sif were among the goddesses. The principle of evil among the gods was represented by the trickster Loki. Many of these deities do not seem to have had special functions; they merely appear as characters in legendary tales.

The name also refers to Germanic mythology in general, as it is part of the old Germanic belief system. In Scandinavia , it held on the longest, and in rural areas, fragments of the belief lingered until modern times. It was not a formalized religion based on a book written by a prophet, but a collection of similar beliefs shared by Germanic tribes. The information about the gods, their roles and their relationships was transmitted orally. Today, the mythology is a source of inspiration in literature (see Norse mythological influences on later literature ), and as a system of belief it has been revived as the Ásatrú or Odinism. Most of this mythology was passed down orally, and much of it has been lost. CLANS OF RAGNAROK: NORSE-BASED FANTASY LIVE ACTION ROLE PLAYING What's New: WHAT IS COR?
Clans of Ragnarok (or "COR") is a new Live Action Role Playing game. It's a boffer-weapon game, which means we use foam weapons and bean-bags to simulate melee, thrown, arrow, and magic attacks. The genre of the game finds its basis in Norse mythology (Odin, Thor, Freya...etc.), but moreover, it's set during Norse Armageddon, or "Ragnarok." The whole fantasy world is quite interesting, full of role-playing opportunities, and lends itself to a high-drama game (with knights and wyrms, giant wolves and fallen gods, princesses and thieves...). The game system was created in such a way to allow characters and plots to have a lot of depth; characters are skill (instead of class based), characters are constantly progressing (you don't run out of skill options just because you're high level), and there are so many skill - race - Attunement combinations that you will be unique, even in a large game. Norse Mythology A member of any of the ancient Scandinavian people's known as Vikings. The Scandinavian nations include Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland. Norse is another name for Norwegian or ancient Scandinavian. Their mythology was fashioned after the Roman Empire fell. Norse (Viking) mythology is very similar to Greek mythology. Norse myths were codified during the Viking era (1780-1070 A. D.) Viking - The Viking era was from 1780 to 1070. Vikings were medieval Scandinavian sea warriors that traded and explored from the 8th to the 11th Centuries. In England and Ireland, they were known as Danes. There are two collections of Old Norse writings known as the two Icelandic Eddas. Edda is the most authoritative source of ancient Nordic mythology. Icelandic - Iceland was the last Northern country to be Christianized. Eddas - Two collections of early Icelandic literature that together constitute our chief sources of Old Norse Mythology. The Elder Edda (1056) is dated at about 300 years after the Christians arrived. Its poems are purely pagan and very old. The Younger Edda (1640) was written by Snorri Sturluson in the latter part of the 12th century. The Elder Edda is more important than the Younger Edda.
