Do you dream of telling hidden stories with the eye of a reporter and the tongue of a poet? Can you imagine yourself changing the world, word by word? Are you ready to try? Then Chatham College's Master of Arts in Nonfiction Writing is ready for you. Designed to stimulate student writing and integrate it within a discipline focused on the environment, natural history, and literary journalism, the MANW is a unique program in creative nonfiction comprised of 30 credits of coursework and a 6-credit thesis project of publishable quality. Students in the program must complete a minimum of five writing-intensive workshops taught by published faculty authors and highly acclaimed visiting writers. These workshops may include the following 700-level courses: The Art of Nonfiction Writing; Languages of Space: Writing the Domestic and the Exotic; Literary Journalism; Science and Nature Writing; Memoir; Writing Personal Legend; and Writers Writing: Process, Practice, Perspectives. Limited to twelve students, these writing courses are based on the workshop method and include regular critiques and editing practice. In order to add depth and precision to their writing, candidates for the degree also complete 12 credits of content courses. In these seminars, students study literature that is designed to give their writing a solid grounding in the realm of fact and theory. Students may elect to substitute other content courses relevant to their interests and writing (e.g. graduate courses in history, geography, media arts, or other subjects) with the permission of the program director. A 19-credit certificate is available for those students who prefer not to pursue the Master of Arts degree. Students may seek either of these options on a full-or part-time basis.

1. How can I Add Angle to a Non-fiction Article? Before sitting down to write any piece of fiction, you should be sure that you have an angle. Whether it is a news story for a local paper, an article to be sold online, or any non-fiction piece that you will be selling to a publisher, your article should represent a strong voice. Now this doesn't have to read like a testimonial. There are ways to make your article appeal to the reader without using first person. bodyOffer(7235) 2. How can I add an angle to my article without using first person? · A good way to do this is to think in the third person frame of mind. First of all, refer to yourself in the article as "we" helps. Just replace I with we. It is amazing how a simple switch of pronouns comes off so clean and professional. Observe this comparison: a. I always am looking for new ways to incorporate an angle into my articles. b. We writers are always looking for new ways to incorporate an angle into our articles. · Notice that the latter sentence just sounds cleaner and crisper- much more professional!

The Writing
The writing demonstrates an ability to interpret ideas meaningfully in
context. The "big idea" of the paper is interesting and clear. All the main ideas are clearly related to the "big idea." The main ideas are organized into a logical sequence. The transitions from one main idea to the next are smooth. There are enough appropriate and accurate details to support each
main idea. The choice of words is appropriate, varied, and creates a natural
voice. The mechanics and grammar are integral to the meaning and effect
of the writing. Stylistic variety and choice are evident in elements of rhetoric such
as diction, syntax, structure, and figurative language. The paper is neat and presentable.

Course Description:
Because this basic concept of nonfiction can apply to a wide range of texts, from technical/scientific reports to short newspaper pieces to extended academic arguments, the focus of this course will be narrowed to writing for a general audience. The venue of publication should be conceived as a magazine or newspaper. While the course is not a course in journalism, it is a course that asks the writer to assume a journalistic audience. The particular genres under consideration (personal essay/memoir, critical review, reflective essay, and feature article or biographical profile) are found in typical journalistic venues but the approach we will take to each is one that will recognize the writer's role and language's mediation of the world.

The Art of Creative Nonfiction : Writing and Selling the Literature of Reality > Customer Review #1: Understanding intimately how things work.

A clown for Ringling Brothers, an assistant in liver and heart transplantation surgeries, a baseball umpire, a motorcyclist and a participant in psychotherapy: When it comes to having the experience necessary to write interesting essays, Lee Gutkind is ahead of the game. In his textbook "The Art of Creative Nonfiction : Writing and Selling the Literature of Reality," Gutkind uses his passion for the written word and the experiences that inspire it to assist beginning creative nonfiction writers in their quest to share life through writing.
Covered in the books outline-reminiscent chapters are instructions on interviewing, fact checking, finding ideas, creating dialogue and keeping story files. Straying from the norm of "interesting... [and] accurate," Gutkind stresses that the most important requirement of a creative nonfiction writer is passion- "A passion for the written word, a passion for the search and discovery of knowledge, and a passion for... understand[ing] intimately how things in this world work." In the following chapters, he offers advice on what creative nonfiction is (the relation experiences, often subjective) and is not (encyclopedia truth) in a concise yet affable manner.
