Non-Fiction Writing- Prof. Townsend
Please send a writing sample to Professor Townsend, care of the English Department, before the first class meeting; as a last resort, please bring your writing sample to the first class meeting. Non-Fiction Writing covers a lot of territory. Your sample could be descriptive or reflective prose, an example of your autobiographical or memoiristic writing, or it could simply be writing you have done for a class a paper, in other words. Professor Townsend will post a list of admitted students on Wednesday, January 28.
Additional Information
Please put your name on every page of your writing sample. Your contact information (school, year, phone, e-mail) should go on the first page. Failure to submit material by the deadline will sharply reduce your chances of gaining admission to the course. If you need to know whether or not you've been admitted and you can't come to campus, call or e-mail Catherine Newman. Contact Catherine Newman if you have questions. 542-8200 or crnewman@amherst.edu

Definitions
Before we go any further, we need to familiarize you with some of the terms we frequently use here at Nuketown
Libertarian: We use the lowercase "libertarian", which is a term describing a particular school of political thought. Generally speaking, it is the modern version of the Enlightenment ideal of classical liberalism, which espoused free markets, individualism, rational thought, and the non-initiation of physical force. Nuketown is not a "Libertarian" (uppercase "L") site, which would imply support of the national Libertarian Party. While on occasion we will endorse libertarian candidates, they're always evaulated on a case-by-case basis.
Objectivism: The philosophy of Ayn Rand, author of the novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged , as well as numerous non-fiction philosophy books. Nuketown is not an Objectivist Web site, but it does approach its brand of classical liberalism from that perspective. Thus, we're not interested in publishing anarchist or anarcho-capitalist tracts.

a guide to her non-fiction writing
The Essays
are a wonderful introduction to the world of belles lettres .Virginia Woolf's literary career began in her father's library. She read the classics whilst young, then began to write about her literary experiences, producing reviews for the Manchester Guardian and the Times Literary Supplement - whose reviews were anonymous in those days. Her tastes are humane and well informed. Read her articles on Shakespeare, Charlotte Bronte, and Katherine Mansfield - and you will feel like reading the texts again immediately. She is astonishingly wide-ranging - from the Greek classics via Renaissance drama and Enlightenment journalism, to contemporary fiction. The approach is rather biographical and author-centred, but these are humane and gracefully composed essays which speak eloquently on literary and cultural life.
The Letters are for specialists and the ultimate gossip trivia for Woolf fans. There really is everything from laundry bills, to dinner party recipes, and snobbish lists of people who are 'in' or 'out'. Many of them read as if they were written for public consumption, and even in the gossip there is a lot of repetition. It's interesting to note just how much of this listing and gossip-mongering is recycled in one letter after another. No surprises here. The telephone had only just been introduced, and there were two or even three post deliveries a day at that time. However, if they are read in conjunction with her biography, it is possible to trace the ebb and flow of her personal relationships at very close quarters. For a richer insight into the workings of her keen intellect and creative spirit, the diaries offer greater rewards.

"Stax Records represents a milestone in the history of American music," Bowman says. "It defined what we now know as Southern Soul music." The first volume, the

Course Description
This course aims to help students develop a professional approach to the writing of non-fiction. We will primarily use magazine writing as a model but we will also explore other venues, such as books, on-line publishing and radio commentary, as outlets for writers' work. (The range will depend upon the interests of the students who enroll.) I believe that the best way to learn styles of writing is to practice them. This course will therefore emphasize creative story ideas and lots of writing and revising. The classroom time will be interactive and collaborative, and will include frequent, intensive workshopping of students' work. We will rely on current magazines and other publications for story models and topic guidelines. The course assumes a graduate level of accomplishment in writing, but doesn't presume that students have any background in journalism. We will study and practice elements that strengthen non-fiction work, including interviews, anecdotes, factual research, and the use of background narrative. The types of articles that students will write may range from the heavily reported to the first-person essay, as long as the stories include the elements described above.

Do you feel you have a fresh perspective on life's goings-on? Did you look at a building today and wonder what's going on inside? Is there an event, a person, an idea that you thinkg has been misunderstood, misinterpreted, under-appreciated? If so, come and investigate with me. We will spend the semester doing our best to write out of that paper bag that is made up of our curiosity, our observations and our prejudices. The best creative non-fiction explains, but it also makes us run to learn more about the subject. We will have a special emphasis this fall on humor, perhaps the most difficult type of writing to pull off. We'll look at different definitions and styles of humor, from Woody Allen's to Mark Twain's to, with good fortune, your own. I've been lucky enough to spend a career writing such stuff and look forward to finding out different ways of doing so from you. We will be reading some of the best magazine and newspaper writing of the last century - and hopefully be writing some stuff like it as well. We will talk about essays, arts reviews, general features and even sportswriting. Students will be required to write at least two pieces of magazines length (2000 words or so) and several shorter pieces. The longer pieces will be will be presented to the class for workshop criticism. While there are two texts ("The Art of Fact," edited by Kevin Kerrane and Ben Yagoda and "Russell Baker's Book of American Humor"), we will also read current newspapers and magazines and discuss contemporary styles in non-fiction writing. Since I am a practicing journalist, you will be subjected to reading my pieces as well - and I intend to be subjected to your criticism.
