My non-fiction writing
I've done a fair amount of non-fiction writing over the years. Probably my most famous piece is A Primer on How to Work With the Usenet Community , the original guide to using and posting to USENET, written back in 1984, and still in use today with some modification, but it's amazing how radically the net has changed, and how little that document has. There were a number of people who gave good advice and feedback on the drafts, but this document shows that good writing can really be timeless and that the issues the net faces today aren't new by any means. It has been adopted by literally thousands of organizations and translated into at least 20 languages before I stopped counting. It is in the public domain, so it's free for anyone to use. A lot of my non-fiction work isn't publically available. I did a regular technical column for the support newsletter back when I was working at Sun, for instance, and I administered the Nebula Awards for the Science Fiction Writers of America for many years, and wrote the Nebula Award newsletter for them. But I've had three significant public non-fiction gigs, which if you're really lucky or crazy, you might run into. First, a good number of years back, I was a contributing editor to a magazine called Macintosh Horizons. I wrote a monthly piece and reviews for a while (I don't have the exact dates handy, since all my contracts and copies are in a box underneath a hundred other boxes) until the magazine died.

Presenting Fakir Musafar's Amazing Non-Fiction Photo Magazine
UNUSUAL PEOPLE DOING UNUSUAL THINGS WITH THEIR BODIES
The printed version of BODY PLAY magazine was published from 1992 to 1999. It was my joy and pleasure to be able to create each new issue during this seven year period. It's nineteen issues have become a treasure trove of rare information and subject matter. They are now collectors items. However, it became increasingly difficult to continue publication. Subscriptions never exceeded 500 and distributors of alternative publications like BODY PLAY kept going bankrupt. Large retailers of magazines and books refused to handle a magazine like BODY PLAY. Between 1998 and 1999 some 1800 alternative publications were forced out of business by changing cultural and economic forces. BODY PLAY was one of them. We considered going online with the magazine in 1999. Again, cultural and economic forces conspired against us. The subject matter of BODY PLAY did not fit the mold of adult pay-to-see web sites. Internet users did not seem willing to pay for such a slender but content-rich and specialized web site. So in 2000, I decided to keep this web site open but free. In addition to offering a dwindling supply of printed back issues, new videos and rare mail order items, we will be adding personalized articles and photo stories on an occasional basis. Watch for our first internet photo articles on Branding and Cupping which will appear on these pages soon.

Welcome to BT LAND
Outdated and mostly irrelevant biographical information dept: bypass this step Updated finally I'm no longer a recording and concert sound engineer(or pretended to be until I went more than half deaf from those Goddamned guitar playersyou know who you are). And I'm also no longer at the Spinner.com Web site . or Winamp.com. . I've taken the opportunity of being laid off by AOL to go to work full time for Ear Q Technologies , a company that builds hearing testing/analysis/corrective equalization hardware and software. It's a freaking pleasure to be doing something worthwhile for a change and not just herding people like cattele toward web sites and trying to trick them into clicking on things. Check out www.earq.net and see if you're as deaf as you're afraid you might be. heh heh. I'm no longer with EarQ, either, the company having become a casualty of the doomed US economy. I'm working at, oh, who cares? I drive away from Canyon in the wee dark early hours and come home in the evening. Every two weeks filthy lucre is auto-deposited in my bank accounts. It is an elegant arrangement. Ahem...

The non-fiction text level strand of the National Literacy Strategy Framework for teaching has firmly established the importance of giving time and attention to the teaching of non-fiction skills within the Literacy Hour. However, children also use non-fiction materials extensively in work that takes place beyond the Literacy Hour - in science, geography, religious education and so on. The QCA schemes of work exemplify how the National Curriculum requirements for each subject can be translated into coherent learning activities. Each unit of work contains purposeful opportunities for speaking and listening, reading and writing. In planning for curriculum coverage, teachers can link work in the Literacy Hour with work in other curriculum areas. By emphasising the links between English and the rest of the curriculum in this way, pupils are given opportunities to enhance their learning across the whole curriculum and to recognise how knowledge and skills from one area of the curriculum can be developed within another. Work in the Literacy Hour can be linked with work in other areas of the curriculum in these ways:
    • content knowledge acquired in subject area study can be brought to the Literacy Hour as the basis for informed discussion and purposeful writing.

W elcome gentle readers to my world of prose, verse, and general freethinking. Since this is a personal page, I suspect it is appropriate to add some personal information about myself as well as my writings. So, to feed the insatiable appetite of the WWW public at large, I will include enough to tease but not enough to embarrass myself as I am quite on the verge of becoming a recluse. Just look around you, read or watch the news and you can have some understanding of why I disdain regular contact with humans. Still, there are some very fine humans out in the world and they make living worth while. So then, it is to them that this page is dedicated along with many others inspiring me from afar.
Updated 4-26-04/6-1-04 Current events in my life have encouraged me to update my site. I have been nominated for Who's Who and though I first took it for granted, I now see that it is rather a major achievement. All of this has made me nostalgic and I thought I would add some comments about my latest honor. For those comments, please see my personal section. Updated 6-8-04 As this site costs me nothing, it comes with limitations. I am ougrowing it. I have cut several pages to allow more visitors. The Screenplay section and Non-Fiction have also been deleted. I am forced to contemplate a business site and getting a unique domain name. This site will not survive. Everything changes ...

Internet Pearls and Pitfalls ... Lareau's Guide To Writing Markets My Writer's Workshop Hi! My name is Chris Lareau (pronounced "L + Arrow") and this is where I come to learn and work about writing. I hope you can do the same too. Feel free to exchange ideas or links. Visit often as this site will get updated on a regular basis. You'll never know what you'll find here! Bio: According to the family geneology Lareau's arrived in America around 1650 so I guess that makes me a 17th generation American. European Lareau's have been traced back to the Basque country and our current name may have derived from "larea" which is Basque for "by the meadow." Maybe Chris Meadows would be a good pseudonym for me.
Currently, I am a full-time freelance writer living in upstate New York with my wife, a dog, and a cat. I am a columnist for the Themestream website and a medical editor for BriefMe.com.
Prior to devoting my time to writing I was a primary care physician and still have my license to practice.
