COURSE DESCRIPTION
Introduction
This course is built on the assumption that good expository, academic prose develops out of a sustained process of revision. Such exposition engages in thoughtful conversations with a variety of subjects, reflecting personal points of view while taking into account the views of others. Thus, revision is key to everything we will do in this class. I promise to revise my ways of thinking about you, about what we read, and about what you write. In turn, I will ask you to engage in a process of revision that calls into question what you think about teachers, what you think about reading, and what you think about writing. As a way of stimulating this process, I will give you challenging assignments that require revision and re-vision of your spoken and written responses. Because this is a revision-centered course, you are

Course Description: This course is designed for advanced ESL students in an academic program at PMC. In this course, the student will develop her reading fluency in English by working with authentic texts, primarily academic non-fiction, read by university students across the US The primary goal of the course is to move the student, with the help of various reading strategies and skills, beyond a basic comprehension of the material, its ideas and challenging vocabulary, to a critical analysis, interpretation and evaluation of the text. Another goal is to expose the student to a variety of rhetorical styles (modes of writing) in a number of academic disciplines that college students typically encounter as undergraduates. While the emphasis of ESR 215 is on academic reading, other language skills will be developed in the process. A secondary focus of this course is the improvement of oral skills needed to succeed in other academic courses: discussions, and individual presentations.

READING LOGS Reading for thirty minutes each day is also part of their homework. At the beginning of each month, students are given a reading log. It needs to include the listed number of titles (both fiction and non-fiction), and authors. In addition, students need to complete the selected book review of the month. Both must be completed and turned in on time to earn credit. As an incentive, Pizza Hut has joined the schools to motivate students to read. Each child that turns in a completed reading log will get a free personal pizza coupon from their teacher. So READ, READ,READ !!! FRY WORDS In the beginning of the year, a list of FRY Words were given to your child. This list consists of words that frequently appear in the grade level text. It is important that your child learn how to read and write these words. The list has been divided into monthly sections in order to facilitate learning. At the end of each month, your child will have a Spelling test on these words. Refer to the FRY Words list to see the test dates. For information on district test dates Click here
