The “A Grammarian” chapter of How to Write by Gertrude Stein, begins with these statements: I am a Grammarian. We will or we will not cry together. These. Have not a cousin. These have a cousin she is a nun. What are we to make of these words? How seriously should we study their elusive meaning? If Gertrude Stein is the grammarian, why does she break the rules of grammar – at least four times in these first four lines? (Grammarian should not be capitalized. “These” and “Have not a cousin” are sentence fragments. “These” has no antecedent.) What, if anything, is the value of these words and what do they mean for the emerging province of creative non-fiction writing? These are the questions that I hope to address as we jump down the rabbit hole of “A Grammarian.” (For the full text of “A Grammarian” see Appendix A) Gertrude Stein has been studied extensively as a poet, novelist, and playwright.
