9. LSU Libraries - Reference Tools Tutorial
give lists of statistics and specific facts and lists of the presidents, nobel prize winners, capitals, etc.. providing citations to biographies of individuals
http://www.lib.lsu.edu/instruction/reftools/reftools-print.html
Reference Tools This module will introduce you to some of the basic reference tools to help you with general research on a wide variety of topics. Once you have finished with this module, you will:
  • Be familiar with the different types of reference tools such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, atlases, etc.
  • Know how to locate both print and electronic reference tools.
Reference Tools: Introduction
Definition:
  • Reference tools (dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc.) are sources of information that provide facts and figures in an easy-to-find format (alphabetical, topical, or chronological). Unlike "regular" books, reference resources are not designed to be read from beginning to end. They are designed to provide easy access to specific information so a person can quickly find the answer to a question they have.
Uses:
  • Reference tools provide:
Background information Pointers to other sources of information (in their bibliographies)
    Formats:
    • Reference resources can be in many formats such as book, database, webpage, cdrom, etc. Electronic reference resources such as the online version of Encyclopedia Britannica are becoming especially popular although many people still find print versions easier to use.

    Introduction
Thousands of sources in the Library and on the Internet may contain biographical information. This guide provides citations or links to many of them. By using some recommended search strategies on DELCAT you should be able to ferret out additional sources not listed here. Determining the appropriate biographical source involves first asking yourself three questions. These are:
    • "Is the person alive or dead?" "Is the person American or not?" "Is the person noted in a particular place or profession, or of a particular ethnicity or gender?"
Depending on your answer to the first question, proceed either to the section in this guide covering biographical sources which are retrospective or general in scope (these include persons of all historical periods, including the present, or those who are dead) or to the section covering sources which are contemporary in scope (these include only living persons). Upon arriving at your jumping-off point, be prepared to ask yourself the second and third questions.

    SOURCE OF ACQUISITION:
There is some confusion as to the precise donors of material represented in this collection. While several individuals were recorded as "presenting" files, not all of these individuals apparently have material represented in this collection. Also, within the original file is a note recording the removal of several boxes of material from this collection, which at that time was in storage at the NCCROW. It is not noted if these items were returned. However, it is known that the bulk of this material comes from two sources: Ernestine Thurman-Swartzwelder and Dorothy Furlong-Gardner. Other sources are Linda Perret and Martha Owens.
    RESTRICTIONS:
    None
    ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
The material has been arranged within individual collections.
GENERAL NOTE: A chronology of events has been constructed in an effort to assist research and retrieval. FINDING AIDS: Inventory available.
